The Complex Life Of One Guy's Mortgage

Dan Edstrom is an expert in the way finance companies bundled mortgages together, sliced them up, and sold them off to investors.

He created this chart that's making the Internet rounds this week. It looks like some crazy metabolic pathway, but it's actually a picture of everything that's going on with the mortgage on his family's house.

It's sort of like putting a toxic asset under a microscope, and looking at what's going on with a single mortgage. Even after everything we've learned about toxic assets, it's still amazing how ridiculously complex the system is.
