Hey, PUT DOWN THAT ROTTEN FRUIT. There's no need to be hostile. Let me explain.
Lifetime's movie ran back in April, to coincide with the wedding. The Hallmark Channel gave theirs, which is called simply William And Catherine: A Royal Romance, another four months to cook, right? That might be promising. More to the point, though, you will be shocked when I tell you who's in it. Mind you, I haven't seen it — I got a screener of Honeymoon For One, but not of this — but when they presented this at press tour, people kept sort of shaking their heads. Like, "Wait, that person is being played by WHOM?"
Prince Charles is being played by Victor Garber. That's right: SpyDaddy is playing RoyalDaddy. I'm going to very politely argue he's a mite too attractive to play Charles, but hey, that's a really, really good actor.
Victor Garber and Jane Alexander.
And look at that! Playing Queen Elizabeth! That's Jane Alexander!
And look at that! Playing Camilla Parker-Bowles, that is the divine Jean Smart!
What on earth is going on here? This supporting cast is good enough for a hoity-toity Broadway play. But the promo really does not make it look very good, and I could certainly live without Ghost Diana, who looks positively cringe-inducing.
Director Linda Yellen has among her credits the 1982 TV movie The Royal Romance Of Charles And Diana, so apparently, this is ... a very tiny niche? (Please note: that movie starred Olivia de Havilland, of all people, as the Queen Mother, so this kind of thing isn't unprecedented.)
I'm oddly fascinated by this great cast in this ... somewhat odd-looking project. Jane Alexander has four Oscar nominations! Four! What is happening?
The film is on Saturday night at 9:00, and if my power is on, I must admit that I may be too curious not to find out.
