Another Afternoon in Surgery

Leroy's infection is proving difficult to treat. Over the weekend he moved from the local hospital back up to Johns Hopkins. His doctors have concluded that the infection is centered in his spine. So this afternoon, Leroy is having another spinal surgery so the doctors can clean out the original surgery site. He'll remain in the hospital for a few days after that.

Some of you have written in with concerns that Leroy's infection might be the drug-resistant MRSA strain that has been in the news lately. Leroy's doctors are confident that this is not MRSA.

The good news is that when I talked to Leroy this morning, he sounded great, really energetic and confident, and ready to knock out this bug.

Laurie asks for our thoughts and prayers for Leroy as he faces another surgery this afternoon.

Dear Leroy,

The road you have taken has certainly had it's rough spots, most of which you never thought you would get through, but, despite the doctor's prognoses, you were able to overcome all the challenges you faced. My husband's cancer is very similar to yours as I have stated in the past. He has been following the same path as you for the past 20 month and he too has beaten the odds; he too is a fighter. We have just arrived home from his CT scan and are awaiting the results, which as we all know is pure torture.

The strength of your posts and this blog community has sustained me during my darkest hours. I wish you a speedy recovery my friend. Laurie.......hang in there.

Leroy and Laurie,
You are both in my prayers. You know, when I read that Leroy sounded positive it made the situation seem okay. I know that attitude alone may not solve all problems, but for anyone (healthy or not) some bit of positivity can help us find some peace or maybe even a little bit of contentment if we're lucky. Hang in there.

Sent by Beth S. | 9:52 PM ET | 10-22-2007

Leroy, although I have followed your blog for almost 6 monthes, this is my first time writing. I am not by nature a 1/2 full kind of gal. I hear and read about the power of positive thinking, and I always wonder do I have to believe it for it to work. I do however, believe it the power of determination and strength of will to fight cancer. That is what I am counting on, along with whatever science can add to the mix. You and Laurie certainly seem to have that, so I will pray for your strength to carry you through. It is not like we have any other choice. You are in my thoughts.

Sent by Elissa | 10:38 PM ET | 10-22-2007

Sent by Judith Newkirk | 12:47 AM ET | 10-23-2007

The other day I wanted to write many comments-and I kept deleting them-today I will just write-as I slipped on my wet raining stairs and got a compressed fracture. I've never had back issues-so as I find it difficult to stand up-I have nothing but empathy for you Leroy. Just when I thought that maybe it wasn't enough exercise to walk my dog 1 hour a day-I realized that it is indeed enough. I was distracted and yet another thing to keep my in the moment. Back pain is horrible!!

Someone earlier used the word indignancy. I know it was meant with humourous intentions. I just want to say that humility and being humbled by our bodies is very different than indignancy. Everything-every little thing you are about is dignified! and more! I hope you get well soon!!

Sent by Linda | 12:53 AM ET | 10-23-2007

"Where does humility fit into in my new routine?" Don't even think of it now Leroy. We are all here right behind you and cheering for you.

Dear Leroy and Laurie,

I had just found your blog this past weekend. I've been looking for an honest account of what happens to someone who has cancer. I finally found you. I bookmarked this blog so I could come back and read it all. I was very concerned when I returned to your blog to read that you were having problems. My best wishes and prayers go out to you. You have to keep fighting.

Thank you Maeve for taking the time to update us. I know this must be difficult for you as well, watching your friends fight this battle. You are all being held in our love and in the hands of God. Rest well all

I'm going to light a candle for you and pray right now for your complete recovery and comfort!! Good vibes coming from Beautiful Monterey California (we're fortunate not to have the fires here-they need prayers) but it is warm and beautiful and the sea lions are barking for you TWO! Love,

Dear Leroy and Laurie,

I have been living with cancer for a year. Your notes about your personal journey have made mine feel less lonely.
I send you love and energy.

Hello Leroy,

Many blessings for the wonderful human you are being.

One thing bothers me. You keep referring to when you get back to how things used to be.

Please do not waste your time trying to recapture a past state. Enjoy the good parts of the here and now.

Namaste,
Sky
