Good News, Bad News

Monday night was one of those endless hospital nights. You lie there for hours knowing you're not going to sleep. Just hoping for morning to come.

But a lot happened yesterday. Turns out I have a serious infection, a staph infection. That's what was causing all the trouble Sunday night. So I'll spend a couple more days in my hospital room.

There IS some good news. I got my staples out! And this time it really didn't hurt. Maybe that's some sort of omen?

Well let's hope it's some sort of omen! Geez, man, you've been through an unbelievable ordeal. So we'll hope, we'll pray, we'll meditate on this being the start to a new Leroy, with less pain and more mobility, less discomfort and more sleep.

Yay on the staples, boo on the staph infection. For what it's worth, my 13-year old son landed in the hospital last year with a antibiotic-resistant staph infection, and after a couple days of antibiotics, he was just fine. As I'm sure you will be too! Quick note to Laurie - I know this rollercoaster is tough on you, too - we are all with you as well.

That's horrible Leroy!

Hang in there. Things ARE going to start improving - soon!

Yay the staples are gone...painlessly.

Boo on the infection. Damn.

Hoping you are home soon.

Hugs,

Glad that things are improving even though you are back in the hospital. Hopefully, you can get the infection under control and exit the hospital before you catch one of the nasty bugs there.

Glad the staple removal went well. I had 27 staples in the left side of my stomach/lower rib cage area when I had my kidney removed due to RCC. The removal of the staples was not something I looked forward to. There is a device the doctor used to remove them and it was painless. I was astounded!! As you stated, maybe you've turned the corner and good things will be multiplied for you.

Prayers as always.

Leroy,
Sorry to hearabout the infection. I had a staph infection myself in the lung where my cancer started. The antibiotics took care of the problem. IV in hospital and then oral at home. I pray they have been able to kill the pain. That is the worse. It invades all aspects of your life.
Peace and all good.

Wow! These Staph infections are reaching epidemic proportions. How awful Leroy, that you go in the hospital, have such a very serious operation, and then come home with an infection which possibly could have been prevented by more cleanliness on the hospital's part. Get home again as fast as you can Leroy.
Wonderful news about your back surgery. Sounds like your pain there may not be too severe - right? Oh, it is so good to hear from you again.
When we turned on the TV this morning, that was all they were talking about - Staph Infections, even in our little VA schools and hospitals. All they do is "Antibiotic" us all to death.
Keep up the fight Leroy. We love you!

How hopeful that sounds! Made me think of the Cat Stevens song -

"Morning Has Broken, like the first morning...praise for the morning...
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light,
Eden saw play
Praise with elation,
praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day!"

Peace, joy, hope and strength to each of you today.

Dear Leroy,

A staph infection was what I feared. Go in for an operation, come out with some other bug. It may be common, but that doesn't mean it's ok. I'm sorry to hear about this, but from your tone, it sounds like they are sure they can knock it out successfully. Hugs to you and Laurie. I hope she's hanging on too. I know she's under tremendous stress. God Bless, and Be Well!

I once had abdominal staples and could not believe how painlessly they came out. I'm glad your experience was similar.

That's too bad about the staph infection. It's becoming so common anymore; I just read today that deaths due to staph infection are exceeding deaths due to AIDS. Apparently there are some hospitals in Pittsburgh that are the country's leaders in pioneering ways to seriously reduce the staph rate. If there was some way to reduce these infections, it would mean great things for spiralling healthcare bills nationwide. I wish a candidate would seize on the aspect of prevention.

You sound good, considering, and I hope this setback is turned around soon. I check in daily and hope for the best for you and your people.

Good Morning Leroy, Laurie and All,

What a great morning this is! I really didn't expect to see a post from you this morning, Leroy. You certainly got my day off on the right foot this morning! Unfortunately, post operative staff infections are all too common. But your treatment team will know how to handle this and those nasty staff bugs will soon be history!

Laurie, I hope that things will calm down for the two of you soon. You both have been through more than enough for quite awhile!! Smooth sailing ahead has certainly been earned!

To All, Have a really great day and please join in a Rain Dance for the Southeast. We really need some rain down here! God Bless!!

Dear Leroy,

When I read that you were back in the hospital, I groaned. Yes, it is the place to get the care you need, but it is definitely not a place for rest. All the endless visits by caregivers that put paid to any chance of actually getting any sleep!

But your news today - that your staples are out and the procedure did not hurt - I am elated for you! Hip hip hurrah!

My prayers are that the coming days are filled with similar good news.

Hi Leroy, Laurie, Ted, Maeve and everyone in blog land..

Leroy, I'm so sorry your to hear about your circumstances, I hope you get better soon! ... I myself have been ill the past 4 or 5 days and have just checked your blog. Maybe this message was meant for you, and came through me in a strange way, I believe we all receive messages, but need to really look at them to know they ARE being sent from angels or what ever you believe in.

I left my house last Wed morning at approx 8:30am to go to the DMV (aprx 10 miles) then to my mom's too pick her up, (about 4 miles) then to a instant oil change place (about 20 miles). When they popped the hood, the guy said "Do you know you have a cat in your hood?" I said "What?!" Afraid of what I might see, I looked into the engine and too my surprise there was a cat gripping my battery for life, and it was ALIVE! I must've driven at least 30 or so miles with this poor little kitty clinging to my battery. I immediately reached in a grabbed the poor little kitty and she grabbed hold of me and just held on. aside from a little burn on her chin she seemed to be OK. Anyway... I then went to the pet store and the girl who worked there her name ironically was Angel, she said the cat was a Maine Coon or mix of it, because she has one and knows what they look like, I bought some food and they were nice enough to give me some water in a bowl and I gave it to the cat and she gobbled it up like she hadn't eaten in a very long time. I wish I could've kept the cat myself, but my landlord has a no pet policy. So, the cat went to a friend of my mom's who does animal rescues and is now safe, and the owner is trying to be notified (the cat was de-clawed) .. The instant oil change guy said he had found animals in the hoods of cars before but NEVER alive. I thought I should share this story with all of you because after all that, the little cat is STILL ALIVE! It must've gone through hell and back and then some!

Positive healing vibes are being sent to you Leroy from me and I'm sure from all! Don't loose hope. Carpe' Diem! Shirl Dolitz

Each morning I sit down at my computer to hear how you are doing, Leroy. It sounds like it's been a tough stretch, and I (like so many of your "fans") am sorry to hear that. I know it must be tough on you and Laurie both for you to be back in the hospital, but I would imagine the stress of wondering what you were feeling on Sunday and trying to decide what was wrong, etc. was at least as bad. I hope you're on a better trajectory now, and I wish you as quick a recovery as possible. And hopefully, while you're focusing on the staph infection, the back is still healing. Congrats on getting the staples out relatively pleasantly. It's always wonderful when something goes better than expected.

Best,

Hi Leroy,

Great to see you post and great news on the staples being painlessly removed. I'll bet you could still use the scars as part of a nice Halloween cancer, though.

I had a MRSA two years ago after surgery. But it is gone and I am "off precautions." Basically, that means it's on your med record as a carrier, until you test clean three successive times, at least a week (I think) apart. Just yesterday I was reading a news article that a CDC doc thinks this might be more epidemic than AIDS.

I was glad to see John Shippee's post yesterday. I had been wondering where you've been; but, hoping it was on a vacation or such. I am so sorry for your setback. But, I'm happy to see that you still seem to have a lot of fight and determination to stay with us. Keep on typing!

Sent by Sheara | 11:46 AM ET | 10-17-2007

Well, in a way, it's Good news/Good news:
1. The infection has been found and is being attacked, and
2. Your staples were removed painlessly.

Definitely, an omen...or maybe a harbinger? Somehow that word has a more positive sound.

Wishing you and Laurie some reasons to smile today.

I was so sorry to hear about your infection. Why is it that we take one step forward and two steps back? I don't know what other words of comfort to give you. The only thing I can offer is my prayers.
Bless, O God,
all who struggle with cancer.
Empower them with hope
for each and every day.
Provide them with loving
and tender care, laughter,
and the support of love.
Grant them
courage when they are afraid,
comfort when they are in pain,
and your blessing
when all else seems hopeless,
that in their fight with illness
they may continue to praise you
and glorify your name.
Amen.

Friends ???

First ??? Leroy, what guts! I didn???t expect you???d be writing us for several more days. I???m sitting at home in my Laz-e (truly) Boy and only beginning to restart correspondence 10 days after the seizure. I truly can???t imagine the pain and ???I-don???t-want-to-do-anything-just-let-me-lie-hereness of a staph infection on top of major surgery. After my own brain surgery a year ago, they kicked me out of the hospitatl in 4 days ??? partly to prevent such an occurrence (and partly because they needed the bed). Anyway, my sympathies and admiration to you and Laurie. It can???t be easy ??? and as you know, you are both examples and encouragements to all of us.

I???d also like to join in thanking Maeve M. for taking the time from her many duties to keep us up to date and NPR (yes, I???ve pledged) for keeping this blog going. It???s a major source of support in Cancerworld ??? especially, I suspect, for those of us who don???t have easy access to face-to-face support communities.

I???d also like to thank Elizabeth and other staff for hanging in there and posting yesterday???s overlong blog.

Finally (really!) I want to thank those of you who responded directly to that offering. It???s my view ???maybe not NPR???s original intent ??? that such efforts should offer the opportunity for the community building that can come from crosstalk. It does my heart immense good to know that someone has read and thought about my input. For those who think this is inappropriate (after all it is your blog, Leroy), and want to respond anyway, you can get me directly at johnshippee@hotmail.com.

Leroy, I got a note from a good friend who suggested her prayers were those "scrubbing bubbles" at work against my cancer and that any tingles or twitches I felt, were really those little guys working hard. I'll share my "scrubbing bubbles" with you and let them get the staph all cleaned up. She did say they need encouragement from time to time. I give mine ice cream. I hope you are home soon.

Geez, Leroy, if it isn't one thing, it's another. I had been thinking you might have an infection and that was the cause of your continued pain. (Don't mind me, I'm a frustrated would-be doctor. After all the exposure to them over the past several years, I feel as if I'd be just fine...if only they'd let me write scripts!) Anyway, I know you hate being in the hospital, but now they know the cause and soon you will be on your way. I do find it ironic that you are back in the place where you more than likely contracted the infection in the first place, but there you are. And the staples are out!

Your continued courage and sharp humor and wit never cease to amaze me. You are one hell of a man, Leroy Sievers.

Staph's nasty -- but almost painless staple removal? Fantastic! You're that much less bionic. Have been thinking of you -- praying they've got the pain under control. Many thoughts, this evening, about a friend with cancer, many years ago, and about she, and all of the buddies, giggling about "morphine-lite" -- get the pain help you need -- your mind will take up way too much energy fighting the pain, otherwise.

I remember when I was released from a three week hospital stay after being diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors told me that I would probably end up back in the hospital, if not the ICU, because of the germs I would pick up from my kids. I never did catch anything from my children. Instead, a staph infection (which I probably picked up from my own body) set me back in the hospital for 10 days. Those staph infections are nasty. Get well soon and go home already! :-)

Your role is not, by any means, underestimated here and I hope you are aware there is no river too wide or too deep for one of us to maneuver to get to you, should you need any help at all. We all need help at times, but some of us "forget" how to ask. Please know our love extends way beyond Leroy and right into your territory--you are so important to us too!!!

Love, Briana

Leroy,]
Major bummer. I was reading about all of this MRSA stuff on the train home from NYC and came home to find your blog. My thoughts are with you as always.

Take good care.
