Walking a Familiar Path

“We've spent a lot of time on that path. Carrying 40-pound packs getting in shape for the invasion of Iraq. We've hiked in sunshine, rain, snow, you name it.”

About 40 yards. That's how far I got before we had to stop and sit on a bench.

My friend Ted Koppel had taken me back to the path along the Potomac River where we used to hike regularly. As a matter of fact, he and I did our normal six mile loop two years ago, the afternoon before my doctors found the brain tumor.

We've spent a lot of time on that path. We carried 40-pound packs getting in shape for the invasion of Iraq. We've hiked in sunshine, rain, snow, you name it.

Five years ago, after my first cancer surgery, that's where I did my rehab. Ted, Laurie, and I would go each day, a little farther each day. About a hundred yards the first day. Six miles, with ease, a few weeks later.

So Ted took me back there over the weekend. I've only recently been walking without the walker. I still have the pump attached to my arm.

We walked from the parking lot to a bench by the path, rested, and then went about 40 yards to the next bench. I was pretty much exhausted. Time to turn around and call it a day.

But it was great to be out in the fresh air. Great to be on the path I know so well. Great to reclaim a bit of my old life.

Next time, we'll go a little farther.

Yes, in deed! That's way... Several surgical procedures, days in the hospital, not sleeping well, and now, walking out side without a walker! Absolutely a huge positive step (no pun) there Leroy!

40 yards, who's counting? Every step without the walker is a plus and accomplishment! Congratulations!

What good news this morning Leroy! What a REAL Thanksgiving this is! Didn't realize how fast you were progressing along the path of recovery. Without your Walker? Wonderful!
There is nothing I can add to this today. You have said it all and I am so glad to hear such optimism. What great friends and supporters you have. You are indeed, loved and respected very much!

Sent by J C R | 8:07 AM ET | 11-19-2007

Attention everyone.....Big Man Walking!!!

This is terrific to read!! Add another bench as a goal each time you go out and soon the six miles will again be realized.

Even in your exhaustion, I know that this achievement must give you hope that a gradual return to some familiar activities is possible and doable, albeit at a slower pace than before. Remember this day; etch it into your memory so that months from now, you can recall exactly when and where your first steps were taken. I am thrilled for you, Laurie and Ted.

Your accomplishment may not seem like much to you but it does reaffirm for many of us that our prayers, good thoughts and best wishes are helping in some small way. They will continue

Prayers as always.

Wonderful to get out and have goals. I was just thinking this morning whether I could get around the block with my dog without getting short of breath (I didn't want to carry my O2 tank). I feel better out in the fresh air too and am glad you were able to do so. Sounds like you are making great progress - GO LEROY:)

Hi Leroy,

This resonated so powerfully with me. Following my lung surgery and subsequent radiation and chemo, I couldn't walk the stairs at home without sitting down for a few minutes' rest. I would try to take the dog for a walk and she would sense that something was wrong; instead of pulling, as she did before and does now, she crept along carefully, constantly looking back at me to be sure I was OK.

Not only was I OK, but I was healing and learning how to do it all again. I am so glad you are back on the path again. It is a huge step to get going again but now you've taken it and each day will bring a little more.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!!

Hurray Leroy! You're terrific news has put a big smile on my face. We can choose to view our lives by what we cannot do, or by what we can do. I think that choosing the latter option brings more peace and healing in the long run (no pun intended!). This Thanksgiving season, here's to you, Laurie, Ted, and your entire healing team!

Ah, delighted at your "outing" during this past week-end: Saturday in VA was glorious.

Don't discount the effort it took you to get to the path!!! In the post-op and treatment world, just getting through the door and out is a major accomplishment.

By Thursday you will be speed walking to the holiday table.

There's another benefit of this blog: your progress will be chronicled. I never did take official note of how, and how quickly, I recovered from various treatments and procedures, which I sort of regret now. The leaps and bounds of improvement were, in most cases, stunning.

Oh, and celebrated...your progress is well-chronicled AND celebrated by us, your legion of fans and friends!!

Your post reminded of how I felt after getting out of the hospital this past July. Our "familiar path" is called Turtle Lake in the Buddist Monastery down the road from us. It's a wonderful place to walk. There are several places set up to sit and think.
At first I thougt I'd never walk there again, after a few weeks Ter and I went to try it out and after a very short way I barely got back to the car. Each week I'm able to go a little farther. This fall has been a joy, and I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Remember it is about progress not perfection. I think and pray for you everyday. Take care - Becca

That's great news, Leroy. Being out in nature is good for the soul. Yesterday around sunset I went for a walk on a trail along the river with a loved one who struggles with depression and addiction. It did us both so much good just to let our eyes rest on the ripples of water with the sun glinting off them, listen to twittering sparrows, watch a hawk swoop down, see a fisherman casting his line. Aaah. So much to be grateful for.

On Saturday, I walked in the Help the Homeless Walkathon in DC. Three miles. I just kept putting one foot in front of the other, and my husband or sons were beside me the whole way. What excellent news! it is so gratifying to hear -keep up the good work and the positive attitude! I also want to thank you for mentioning Ted Koppel and how he has been such a devoted friend through all of this. It reminds us all that, with a little creativity and concern, we can find ways to be useful to our friends when they need us. Instead of saying "call me if you need anything", we could say,"I'll be here for you,by your side for whatever you need-baby steps are fine!" And then we can BE THERE to follow throughwhen they do need us, which lets our friends know we were making a sincere offer. Hats off to both of you!
