Steps in the Right Direction

“My knees were shaky, my feet uncertain, but still I was able to do it.”

I walked.

It wasn't very far, maybe 30 or 40 feet total. I started between two parallel bars, but did the last 10 feet with a walker.

This was more than I ever expected.

My knees were shaky, my feet uncertain, but still I was able to do it.

I have to admit, I was scared before I actually did it. But I did it.

Now I know something I didn't know before ... Maybe the road back isn't as long as I thought.

And I've heard over the last couple of weeks about all your messages. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers.

Welcome BACK Leroy,
It is with such happiness that I read of your "real" road to recovery. You will and CAN do it. You are truly amazing, and so is Laurie. She sure writes like you do. We are so lucky that you are sharing all of this with us. See, you surprised yourself....but we aren't surprised. You have an inner strength which will not concede.
Prayers, Love and May the Grace of God be with you.

Leroy,
So glad to hear from you! It's not the distance that matters (though it is impressive!)...it is the determination and spirit you used to get there. Sometimes we all want the big results right this second, and we forget that there may be a road we have to travel to get there. Here's to you, taking giant steps down that road.

Leroy, I watched the Iron Man Triathalon last weekend. I am always inspired by the people who compete who have disabilities (or abilities as they would say)- a 67 year old blind grandfather; a double amputee (no legs) were just two. They refused to be defined by their disabilities but rather by what they can do! I thought about you, not that you'll do a triathalon soon! Just as they inspired me with their spirit and heart, you continue to inspire us all with your spirit and heart. You are my Iron Man, a winner in every sense of the word.

Small steps are a begining. That little flame of Hope in my heart continues to burn and it becomes brighter with each day's good news.

Prayers as always.

Sent by Al Cato | 9:16 AM ET | 02-21-2008

Leroy!!!! So nice to hear from you!

A little is enough at this point!

Keep getting better and tomorrow make it a tiny bit more and then a little more and before you know it you are back to good.

Keep strong and defeat that monster!!!

Prayers are with you (and Laurie).

Love,
Cristina

When I started reading the blog this morning, a huge smile spread across my face as I realized it was your words, Leroy. I loved hearing Laurie's perspective over the last week or so (and so very much appreciated her updates about your condition), but knowing that you were able to write again meant you were feeling better.
For that reason, I'm guessing that Laurie was more than happy to hand the reins back to you. I'm so happy for you both.

Sasha, hang in there and stay "tough" for your husband. Prayers are with you two.
Kathy C, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My love, and husband of 37 years, was claimed by this MONSTER 10 1/2 months and I miss him more each day. Yes, it gets easier to get through each day without falling apart but a part of me is forever gone.

Just got home from work and pulled up your website waiting to hear what Laurie had to say today..and Lo and Behold -- there YOU were! Not only that .. God must think you are awfully special to get you back on your feet again so quickly. He knows how much we ALL need you, so you put on that Fats Domino record "I'm Walkin" and keep on keepin' on! Leroy,
WELCOME BACK!!! Good gosh, you would think that this cancer would just give up and quit messing with you. It is good to have you back with us and to hear your thoughts directly from you. However, Laurie did an EXCELLENT job of keeping us all in the loop of what was going on with you. You two are amazing and it is so cool the way you are both willing to share this experience with all of us. I know you already know this, but just a reminder that there are a lot of us that love you and are pulling for you and sending you all the positive thoughts and energy that we can every day. Keep fighting Leroy and know that we are all by your side and rooting for you. By the way, of course you walked today...was there ever any doubt? If any body could do it Leroy, it would definitely be you!

Sent by Cindy C. | 7:00 PM ET | 02-21-2008

Sent by Sydney in NC | 7:01 PM ET | 02-21-2008

Leroy,
You make my heart sing! So good to read your words again. As they say, every journey starts with a single step.

Sent by Beverly | 7:16 PM ET | 02-21-2008

EXCELLENT and AWESOME, Leroy!!!!!!!

Pretty good moves for a guy who was contemplating hospice and the afterlife.

Why do I feel like I should break into the song Rex Harrison (Prof. Higgins) and the other fellow sang in "My Fair Lady" celebrating Higgin's accomplishment with Audrey Hepburn (Eliza Doolittle). I can't even remember most of the words, but part of it and the tune popped into my head.

Yep, you have had an extension added to your warranty again.

That is what we all, me included, have to remember every day, that there may be a miracle around the corner. With God in our corners anything is possible until the day that God calls us home to Him for a good rest.

God bless those doctors and med staff, etc., you have who helped make today possible for you and more days after. And God bless that fiesty, stubborn, strong, and fighting spirit/soul/spark of life, whatever you want to call it within you. Laurie must have been practically doing cartwheels herself when you did that, at least mentally.

Now as for me and the rest of this blog family, I think we gotta remember the lesson you gave today, that we have hidden strengths we can't even imagine until we are confronted with life threatening diseases or disasters that put us in fights for life and limb. It is God, not some speculating doctor, but God who says when we go home.

God bless those who are our caregivers who most likely are family members who have to stand by us and witness some medical nightmares and who feel the loneliness when a loved one gets God's call home.

The fights aren't easy either, but those victories are fantastic when we have them and the size of the victory doesn't matter. They are all good.

Thank you, Leroy, for letting us share each of your victories and the downs, too.

In the words of Tiny Tim that just seem right for my thoughts, but may be a bit cliche, but was said so well:
"God Bless us everyone."

Sincerely,
Bobbie in Texas

PS: The post got longer than I intended. While I was writing this, a local tv newscast was doing a story on a local GI who had severe burns and injuries (I won't go any further than that) from an IED explosion a year ago. To see him actually being able to play outside with one of his kids trotting after the kid on a tricycle. He has terrible scars head to toe and more work to do, but he is alive and becoming more able day by day. Another example of the strength of the human spirit and will to live. bh

I log in every day to read your blog but I don't always put a comment. I honestly but don't know what to write, how to articulate what I think. How any words can even come near what I feel.
It was more steps than I imagined you might be able to make so soon after all you have been through.
Well done.
You'll be chasing those nurses soon enough by the sounds of things.
Thanks to Laurie for filling us in so eloquently in your absence.
My very best wishes to you both and all those you love
