Signs of Strength

“Remember, this is a guy who's been in control, even in the hairiest of conditions, throughout his career.”

Slowly he is taking back control. The physical therapist came in today to put Leroy through his paces. Why are these people always so tiny?

They were doing leg lifts and stretching, and she decided it was time for Leroy to go from the chair back to the bed. He took one look at her and said, "You'll need help!"

So we called in his nurse, who is an ace at this. They counted to three and were prepared to do most of the lifting when Leroy took control and made the move.

A sign that the strength in his back and legs is returning? Yes. But more important, it's that old drive that I haven't seen in a while.

Remember, this is a guy who's been in control, even in the hairiest of conditions, throughout his career.

One little pivot from a chair to a bed.

This is a day to remember.

Dear Leroy and Laurie,
Seems like there must be a piece of music that will go with this occasion: being a Star Trek fan, I'm hearing that theme song playing in the background :-) "da, da, da-da-da-da, da-da-da, dum-dum-dum, du-du-da, dum..." well, my apologies to the composer, but I sometimes think of Leroy as Capt. Kirk, or Capt. Picard, getting back up into the captain's chair no matter what the "alien encounter" throws at him.....and saying "Engage!" This is a day to remember. Thanks for sharing your light and encouragement and "ongoingness" with all of us out here in cyberland.
Take care,
Kim

Pushing the envelope in terms of what you can control is so important in the cancer battle. Even if pushing the envelope is just moving oneself from chair to bed. And the victories that can happen when one does that can feel SO good. Thanks for sharing that.

Happy Valentines Day to you both. Eat lots of chocolate.

Good Valentin's Morning! Something has happened to my message and it has been lost. Here goes again!
Happy, happy to hear that Leroy is gaining control once again! What a guy!
Yes, some of these medical gals who want to do these tasks, are not built for Men's work. Two of them dropped my Mom's Guerny down the stairs when trying to get her to the waiting Ambulance, refusing help from my stronger brother. We watched in horror as Mom bounced from stair to stair to the bottom. Luckily her small, round, little body just bounced down and no permanent harm was done. But - it could have been disasterous. Yes Leroy, assert your control. Good for you.
Have a wonderful Day, you and laurie.

Great news! I remember those first, hesitating steps between the bed and the chair after surgery. The progess is measurable!

I know I said this already, a few days ago, but it is really wonderful of you, Laurie, to continue Leroy's blog while he's recovering. I seem to remember from the Discovery Channel show that you are a rather private person, who didn't really want to experience Leroy's cancer publicly, which makes your willingness to write the blog all the more special and selfless. Thank you for taking the torch - as you can see, it means so much to so many people.

And hi to you too Leroy - next stop, a hallway stroll!

Excellent news today. Thanks for sharing, Laurie.

I remember emailing to family and friends during my husband's fight with the Beast. Those emails became a sort of journal for me--I wish I'd kept them all. You tend to forget those little moments among the big, those small things that change forever what you appreciate--a smile, a step from the bed to a chair, an enjoyed cupcake.

Prayers do work. Have a great day. Kathy

Laurie -- good news. You too are a wonderful writer and I hope that you are keeping a diary of your own. You are to be commended for responding to the blog so that we readers/listeners can send our positive energies your way.
I did not keep a diary all the way through my husband's illness and reading this blog is my way of revisiting everything. And that is a good thing. It helps me.
The two of you have shared a private journey and one that has touched the lives of many listeners and readers. I, for one, am grateful. We collectively experience the highs and lows of your journey. Isn't radio and the internet something??
A big Happy Valentine's Day.

I have been following Leroy's progress from my phone as I had surgery last week. I was so sorry he had to go through this but it does look like things are going as well as they can.

I was really fortunate because they were able to do a VATS procedure on my lung, which meant less cutting and much, much less pain this time. I have been home since Tuesday and can't believe the difference. We did find a new tumor in the other lung on the CT right before this surgery but the surgeon says he thinks we can RFA it if it begins to grow. So next month I am scheduled for two chemoembolizations of the liver and somewhere in there the RFA. A busy dance calendar. Laurie, Leroy and all bloggers have a great Valentine's Day.

I remember when I was first able to transfer from bed to wheelchair by myself, then to stand from the bed, and finally, when I thought it was never going to be possible, to walk. Those are more than milestones. When you feel helpless and out of control, they are gifts of independence. I swore I'd never stop being grateful for the ability to get out of bed by myself, but it fades. It's good to remember how incredible that was.

Happy V (for victory) Day,

On this day of days I have to share this most beautiful Love Poem...written by e e cummings, not only for lovers but those very, very close to us.

Love to everyone, everywhere!
Cathi

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skillfully, mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

e e cummings

...choked up again! What a happy day! I hope this is your best Valentine's ever together- I am sure it will be.
Some sun peaking through the clouds, some signs of an early spring, some hope opening up again. These are the miracles of life, celebrated best with the one you love. Hooray for you both!!!

Dear Leroy and Laurie,

I've been following your wonderful blog and NPR commentaries for a good while now, and wanted to wish you both all good things. Ms. Judith Viorst says it best:
"I wish you, I wish you, I wish you these wishes: Cool drinks in your glasses. Warm food in your dishes. People to nourish and cherish and love you. A lamp in the window to light your way home in the haze. I wish you the sweetest of nights and the finest of days.

I wish you, I wish you a talent for living. Delight in the getting. Delight in the giving. A song in your soul, and someone to hear it. The wisdom to find the right path when you're lost in a maze. I wish you the sweetest of nights and the finest of days.

A snug roof above you. A strong self inside you. The courage to go where you know you must go, and a good heart to guide you. And good friends beside you.

I wish you, I wish you a dream worth the doing. And fortune's face smiling on all you're pursuing. And pleasures that far far outweigh your small sorrows. Arms wide to embrace your tomorrows. A long sunlit sail on the bluest and smoothest of bays. I wish you the sweetest of nights and the finest of days."

--Judith Viorst
