Birthday Cakes and Icing

Today is my birthday. I'm 53.

I remember as a kid thinking that 40 was ancient. Now, 53 seems pretty young.

We talked the other day about setting goals, wanting to live to see a particular event. I have to be honest, my 53rd birthday really didn't fall into that category. I took it for granted. And I made it.

A little battered, a little beaten. But still standing.

Just a quick mention here and then I'll move on. One of the things that does keep me going, that I look forward to every year, is the huge gobs of icing on the birthday cake from the grocery store. I love that stuff.

Things have changed over the last couple of days. Changed dramatically.

No one has said it, at least not out loud, but let's be honest. The odds of my celebrating my 54th birthday aren't great.

There's certainly a chance. We never really know what's going to happen. But it doesn't look so good.

I've thought a lot about this, and in the end, I'm at peace with it.

I know the days ahead are going to be difficult, for me and for others. But things will play out as they are supposed to.

I have to believe that.

In the meantime, there's cake, and more importantly, icing out in the kitchen. And it's calling my name.

Did anyone see the Washington Post article on cancer patients and honest information from doctors when we aren't responding to treatment?

I felt as if the article were talking about my experience of having to dig to get my doctor to honestly tell me how little chances there were for my husband. It was his honesty that enabled Peter to have the end of life experience he wanted- friends, family, painkillers, and no hospital.

I guess this is one of those times where you see what taking it one day at a time really means. GO for that icing, Leroy, enjoy the heck out of it! It might taste bittersweet but also, maybe, better than ever... None of us knows when our time will be finished and we all need to try and savor what we can from each day. Happy Birthday, Leroy, and God bless.

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
Enjoy all the cake, and icing you want (okay so even with all of this, if you like that icing from grocery store cakes...then you have a mammoth sweet tooth...that stuff is sweet and then sweet).
Whatever these days ahead hold, it is all in Gods' hands...we are all here, and we have come to love you dearly.
Prayers and have an extra happy day.

Happy birthday, and happy every day. If we're going to stick together through the bad-scary-miserable moments, then we owe it to ourselves to treasure the good together too. Why should icing be reserved for once a year? Celebrate each meal each day with a dollop! (for at least as long as teeth and stomach don't rebel....)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEROY! Wow, a lot of my friends have birthdays in the last 5 days. Must be a good month.

So, last week I mentioned "carrots" to keep my parents reaching for. For you it will be birthday cake icing. :) HUGE BOWLS FOR YOU! Personally I prefer whipped cream, but, whatever keeps you going is fine. :)

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

It was probably a month or so before Joe died from cancer and for just a second I had a visit from an aunt who had died some years before. I felt her presence for just that second. Her visit was not something I asked for or anticipated at any time during the 14 months of cancer, it was a complete surprise to me, it lasted just a second but was very real. Was she letting me know she would look out for Joe on the other side? Do you think there is nothing beyond the veil?

On our last wedding anniversary Joe said don't worry, the next one will be better. I couldn't imagine it as I knew we would be separated and we were. But Joe was a smart guy. For now I reserve my thoughts about this subject until I get beyond the veil too.

Happy, Happy Birthday Leroy!! As young as you are, you have a lot of wisdom stored up.

Birthdays are a time for recolletion and perhaps, for wondering how you ever got to be "this" old!! Yesterday my son said, "I can't believe that I will be "almost" 50 years old next month. I couldn't help but think "yet your sister never made it to 48." I guess everything is relavent. Just more reasons to realize that we must live in the "now" and enjoy each day as it comes, with gratitude.

I know the days ahead are going to be tough ones for you and everyone who loves you and for so many others in this world. I am thankful that you are beginning to get a sense of peace to your days though...it makes all the difference!!

Wishing you a wonderful day, filled with swipes of ultra-sweet icing, and increasing peace in the days ahead. Who know, you may even beat the odss, AGAIN!!!

Happy Birthday Leroy,

OK - here are my my personal favorites for your next goals... hell freezing over, pigs flying, Sue Chaps wedding (although I think we are all coming to that wedding) and my addition is....once you have met every single one of us who have read, written to and and received so much from this blog. Once you have completed that task, I give you permission to check out.

As a birthday gift, get that icing in a can from the grocery store. It keeps so well in the refrigerator, with a spoon or without a spoon, well it's your birthday.... and so much more quiet than a freezer door !

All best wishes...and we ALL mean this, have many more.

Happy Birthday!!! I hope you have a beautiful day with the people you love and get your fill of icing!

Your post today made me think of my son who is 3. He asks me every single day when his next birthday will be. I'm not sure if it's because of the cake or his friends being here or something else but your entry makes me want to find out what he loves so much about it and try to have a little bit more of whatever that is in his life. Life is too short to just wait for the birthdays for the sweet stuff.

I am glad to read the peaceful tone in your note. You demonstrate so much courage. Thank you again for your honesty and for sharing yourself here. I hope the coming year is not as difficult as you fear. One step at a time.

Happy Happy birthday Leroy!!!!! You are 53 with wisdom of an 80 year old. Some people never achieve what you have in their lifetime. My sister has stage 4 colon cancer, She has been alive for approx. 2.5 years. She is 56 years old and truly one of the bravest people I know of to face this illness. She rarely complains about anything. She is a nurse and is always willing to help anyone. Thank you for all you have given to us... the best presents in the world; Happiness, Gratitude, loving our Lord a little more and being thankful for our times together throughout the years. Today my sister is having another grueling chemo treatment. She will be so sick, it makes me cry. Thank you believing in living, Sincerely, Annette Purdy

Good morning, Leroy

And, I hope you enjoy your birthday today. You're right, 53 is young. I'm in my 50s, so I can attest to that fact! Since you're a lover of icing, I could whip you up a batch of cream cheese icing that is out of this world! I'll bring 2 spoons!

Sent by Judy in NVa | 9:14 AM ET | 06-16-2008

Glad you are getting to enjoy the icing, make sure you get a cake each week to enjoy! My mom wasn't supposed to see the last 2 Christmas' the way her original doctor spoke to us. He told her 6 months to 1 year, here we are 18 months later, 2 Christmas, 2 birthdays, and so on. My mom has told me her goal, her 70th birthday, she is 58. So, we have several more to look forward too. She is a fighter and will keep going as long as she can. She is a little battered but hanging in there. She is amazing and strong, even if she doesn't think so. I love you Mom.

Leroy, I wish you peace and comfort. My brother recently died shortly before his 56th birthday after a year-long ordeal with pancreatic cancer. My only solace is thinking that he now has peace and comfort. You have given me courage and encouragement over the past year, as I've read your blog daily as I've cared for my brother. Thank you so much for giving so much to us all. Your courage and generosity have been amazing. Take care.

Happy Birthday! Enjoy each day as much as possible. Hopefully your celebration has given you a chance to visit with friends and family, which is what keeps me going day to day. Today I hear from Vanderbilt about their clinical trial, certainly not a life saver but perhaps a small extention with a big cost of a six hour round trip commute once or twice a week. Peace,

Happy birthday! Celebrate and enjoy!

You've told us about the changes and obviously they aren't good! Whatever you elect to do or not to do is a point in the cancer fight all of us will most likely face...I'm glad to see that you are at peace! There is a nobility in accepting one's fate along with the peace, calm and serenity that it brings. But beneath all of this is the human spirit that continues to cling tenaciously to life and will continue to do so until it is time to go. We've walked this bumpy and tortuous path together,Leroy, hand-in-hand. You've lifted us up when it was needed and we hope that we have help to steady you along the way. We continue to clasp your hand tightly and hope and pray that the sheer energy and will and prayers of all of your bloggers can continue to keep the darkness at bay for awhile longer.

Prayers and blessings as always for you and Laurie.

Happy Birthday Leroy!

Isn't it interesting how our perspectives of birthdays change over the years? When we were younger, we would say we were "almost 20" when we were 20 and two months. Then we learned to say 41 until the day before we turned 42.

Cancer does change our perspective about birthdays. Two years ago I thought I'd celebrated my last one. So much for doctors' predictions, statistics, and science. Someone else is definitely making the calls.

Thank you for blessing our lives with your wit, wisdom, and insight, and for sharing your life with us; even though we've never met, I check your blog daily and refer to you as "my friend Leory" to my family and friends.

God bless you today and enjoy all the cake and gifts that come your way.

We all love you!

Happy Birthday Dear Leroy!! Enjoy that icing. I'll take some of that cream cheese icing from Judy myself. Take the path less traveled and see some new things today, friend. I read something recently--could have been on here--that when we really focus our attention on something, we begin to see how truly miraculous it is--even a blade of grass. You don't have to fly to Paris, though that's okay too if it's what you want. Are you near the ocean? A walk on the beach at sunset is wonderful. Have a dog? Dogs are the greatest!
Happy Birthday, Leroy!

Icing licked off the beaters from the mixer is a sinful pleasure to be savored! I hope your cake and/or icing is chocolate---chocolate cures the blues---if only temporarily.

I have wanted to write you so many, many, many times. GOD I HATE THIS DISEASE!!! I lost my husband 3 1/2 years ago at the too-young age of 44, my best friend this Feb. at the too-young age of 57, I have a cousin who (dx at 28) is a 9 year survivor, and my mom had a stage I dx last year. COLON CANCER SUCKS! And now....preparing for our Relay For Life, there are so many emotions flooding back to be dealt with.

I have been thinking of you Leroy so much during all of this too. You are one of the 'public patients' always forging on, usually with some sly, witty comment on the unfairness of it all. But, like my hubby Mike & my friend Barb, you have made your peace with the inevitable. I am glad you have come to this place of peace. That does not mean that you have given up. It means that you have faced the ugly truth, and have dealt with it.

There are so many, many things I would like to say to you......but mostly I would just like to thank you for putting yourself out there every day, warts and all, for all to see. Your strength shines through in every post, and I most enjoy your humor. A sense of humor can get us through so many things.

My wish for you is to have joy in your days, and good friends, and family. I believe you have that.

I find myself catching my breath these days before opening your posts, wary of what I might find there. None of us has that crystal ball telling us when our time will come, so there is no need to worry about that. "Live like you were dying"----my hubby was convinced that that song was written especially for him. It was written for you too, my friend. And you have done just that.

I look forward to the report on the icing. Good grief---if the cake is not your fave----go for the icing!!!

Whoot whoot! Amen on the icing...cake is merely a vehicle upon which to heap gobs of the stuff (in my extremely biased opinion).

And amen to you, too, Leroy. I hate being a birthday evangelist among all my friends, but *you* know exactly why I have no patience for people who bemoan the passing of another year...I'll take all I can get.

Leroy,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my friend! Truth be know, none of us know with certainty that we will see the next birthday.

I was stunned when I looked at the "Living with Cancer" site and there was a quote from a Stage IV survivor and she explicity said that with Stage IV cancer it is never an "if" but "when" will it come back. I sure hope she is wrong.

Thinking nothing but great thoughts about you today on this special day that we all get to experience.

I had a friend, who upon turning forty, started extending her celebrations from "birthday" to birthmonth." She figured if she made it to that milestone she deserved more than a day to celebrate. I say celebrate 53, then 53 and 1 day, 53 and 2 days - you get the picture. We could all do with more celebrating of life. Eat all the icing you want and know that there are others out there in blogland celebrating your life with you. You mean so much to me and many others. Happy,Happy Birthday!!!

Happy Birthday Leroy! I see that I am not the only one to suggest it, so that means you really SHOULD keep a jar of that yummy frosting in the fridge to indulge yourself with :)

My dad's birthday was a week ago, and he got his wish to see both of his sons, who live in Virginia and Germany respectively. We had big dinners and my first homemade chocolate cake topped with chocolate buttercream frosting - yum! He took one look at that cake and hardly touched his dinner - what a sweet tooth he has! And with joy, it was also with sorrow, as he is sliding towards the end of life ever more quickly. But as sad as I am, I am also impatient for his suffering to be over at last. He has fought for so long - over 30 years! You remind me of him in your courage and humor. I know that the coming months (and years quite possibly) might well be hard on you and your loved ones; just remember to share with them and to LAUGH! It truly does help to ease our sorrow, and it's ok to do so. :)

With hugs and love,

Danni

Happy Birthday, LeRoy! Y'know, we worry and worry about when The Day comes when we leave this earth---when will it be? When will it be? And then something comes along like Tim Russert's death. It makes one think, what does it matter? All the thinking and worrying about it. It will come....to all of us, one way or another. Think about it. You have just outlived Tim Russert.

Hi Leroy, as long as you're still alive, maybe try an experiment and give up that icing this year. Just for the heck of it (what have you got to lose?), try a vegan, raw food diet, with lots of fresh juice, including daily wheatgrass juice. And look up Gabriel Cousens, MD. His book *Conscious Eating* has a lot to say about what we eat and our states of health.

Leroy:

One thing about having metastatic cancer is that I am pretty darn sure that my death is going to be due to having cancer. I feel somewhat LUCKY (not sure if that is the right choice of words!) to be able get my things in order the way that I want them when I am gone. I get to plan my service, say or write things to people that I want them to know, organize some things at home, etc. I think of the people who are killed instantly in an accident or fall over dead of a heart attack and feel sorry for them because they, most likely, didn't have "all their ducks in a row." I don't like the dying process with cancer but I do like knowing, approximentaly, when I will be dying.

Enough about dying, hey, we are both still alive and you are celebrating a birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to someone who has made a difference in my life.

Happy Birthday, Leroy! You're just amazing and inspiring---even more so because you love icing and are looking forward to that first big forkful of cake.
My mother loved chocolate cake. So one day, during the last weeks of hospice care, a neighbor brought over this magnificent concoction of chocolate on top of chocolate in cake form. Mom enjoyed every bite of her piece of cake. But then, about ten minutes later, she looked at us like we were naughty children and asked us why we hadn't given her a piece of cake. We realized this "lapse in memory" had something to do with her brain tumor progression; but really, who cares. If you want another piece of cake, because you forgot about the last one, just have another piece. I hope you enjoy lots of icing -- remembered and cherished; forgotten and rediscovered.
A great big hug too ... Pat Enciso

HaPpY BiRtHdAY to YOU, Leroy. I am 47 with breast cancer that has metastasized and hope that I make it to 48 in December.
A funny note about frosting/icing. When my little brother turned 10 years old, my mom got him this underwater scene birthday cake with a big green-iced octopus in the middle. Well, my little bro ate the entire octopus as he loved icing too, and he pooped green for days from the color of the frosting octopus! It was hilarious and we like to remind him of it even to this day! So, enjoy that icing/frosting and know that we on this blog LOVE you and wish you the best. Happy B-Day. LM in Arizona

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEROY! If I lived closer to you I would want to bring you a birthday cake personally but I'm sure you have family and close friends that can take care of that, so have a piece for me especially a corner or where the flowers are for the full "icing effect". You have taught me so much about life these past few years in my almost daily readings of your blog. You have helped my family with our cancer experience and for that I will be forever thankful. Save some icing for me as my birthday is next week.

You don't have to wait a full year to have another birthday cake! How about a monthly un-birthday, with a small cake? I was very worried about you post-op with your back; it seemed you had lost your sense of humor with all that pain and struggle. Now, even facing the daunting news of your latest scans there a sparkle of your sense of humor in your posts. We never know how much time we have left. We live on cancer time. Tim McGraw has a great song that reminds me of this each day and truly inspires me. When I first heard this song it really stuck with me. Some may say it is a bit morbid, but I think most of us with Cancer have a really good understanding of what the song is trying to say. Make each day the best! I hope this link reaches you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mHaFMqde6A

And I try to remember it is the journey that counts more than the destination- for all of of us- but that must be a hard one when you've gotten such crappy news recently....

The odds may not be good for 54 but who knows and who gives a hoot! Keep on truckin' One Day At A Time and just maybe you'll make it. I sure hope so and hope is all it takes. In the mean time, you are so 'real' about the icing...eat some for me and all of us out here in cyber space. You owe it to yourself to enjoy this icing. If you were not at peace about what's ahead you would not be able to enjoy that icing today. Enjoy the rest of the day. It is such a gift; that's why they call it THE "Present". Hi Leroy, 14 years ago my sister was told she would live for about a year and a half. Her ovarian cancer was spread throughout her intestines. She is still alive today, minus the large intestine, and going as strong as she possibly can. She is 63 and has been living with cance for over 20 years. She's always knocking walls out of her house, or tearing out the cabinets, or redoing the floors. She says as long as she has "project" she can't die. At the beginning she thought she would never see grandchildren and now she has both a beautiful grandaughter and grandson. Yes, she takes lots of pills, has pain, can't eat most things. Somehow she takes it all in stride and God pours down grace upon her. So I believe the same can happen to you. "Expect the worst and pray for the best" and never give an inch. Happy Birthday and know that all of us want to say it again a year from now.

May you rest well knowing that your husband is at peace, and may you also be at peace to prepare for the coming days. I know there is a lot to do.

I hope the following reading helps you as much as it did me. I had it read at Burge's service. Some how it helped to reason why he was taken so young (51). I found it by accident...or perhaps because I was meant to find it.

Happy, happy birthday to Leroy who is himself the icing on our cake every day! Last year at this time I recall that you weren't ready to look ahead to reaching today. All the more reason to celebrate each day that you have.

I am also a whipped cream gal, with the exception of the awesome bittersweet chocolate/orange icing that my grandmother used to put on the sides of her orange birthday cakes (The top was a white glaze with orange peel and bittersweet chocolate shavings.) In my family this is simply called "the cake."

Leroy,I really wanted to write something witty, something sensitive, something profound with great wisdom..but the right words escape me.So,instead I want to share a short story with you.

Twenty years ago after a personal loss of my own I found myself at the funeral of a young neighbor who had died from aids.I recall walking arm in arm with my father through the cemetery. My dad,who at the time was 60 said this to me:"Daughter,if the good Lord takes me home today..I am ready"I knew at that moment those words spoken to me would bring me great comfort when dad passed away..and they did!I recall reading somewhere that the thought of eternity consoles for the shortness of life.At the time I thought that these were just nice words written by someone. Now I see them for what they were..great words of Wisdom written by someone who obviously lost someone very dear to them in their life.
None of us knows how much time we have left.In fact there are those who have read your blog in the past year who will probably die unexpectedly long before you do.Case in Point-Tim Russert.
I am grateful that you have found peace within. And so if your numbered days total 1-100-or even 1000 please know that you have left a legacy of courage, hope, and some much needed laughter to many of us.I don't think you even realize just how much you have come to mean to those of us who look forward to your daily thoughts and musings.
And so on this Birthday of yours I leave you with one final thought.
From the Movie "The Crow":
I 'll leave you with a line from the movie .........."The Crow":

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge, that myth is more potent that history. I believe that dreams are more powerful than facts - that hope always triumphs over experience - that laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death
Happy Birthday Leroy!!!!!Enjoy your gooey, iced, birthday cake!

Leroy and Laurie - Hope you had an enjoyable day celebrating your birthday. I helped out by eating more chocolate than I should in your honor. Thank you for yet another excuse.

I remember the day that our oncologist told my husband that acute lymphocytic leukemia was extremely nasty - most people don't live more than 2 weeks. He had just been given that bit of good news. If my memory serves me correctly, that was June or so, and he lived until October.

But he really "lived". We did anything and everything he was physically capable of doing. I had a lot of time to tell him how much I loved him. We really did have a lot of quality time together, and I'm so glad we did.

I read the post where someone referred to Tim Russert's recent death. I don't know for sure, but I would bet that Tim's wife would have given anything to have the "heads up" that we were given. I know that Paul was at peace also, which hadn't always been true. Please, Leroy, live like you were dying. It's such good advice that I'm doing the same thing now, and plan to for a long time. Here's to your 54th!!

Always eat the birthday cake! That was the other lesson that cancer taught me. Eat the birthday cake on other's birthday to share the joy of their celebration, eat the birthday cake on your own to show appreciation for whoever bought, baked, or produced it, and to live with abandon!

And all frosting is good. Some is just better than others! Ate TWO pieces of my nephew's chocolate cake with ganache filing this weekend . .. how glorious.

Happy Birthday to YOOOOOOOUUUUUU!!!

Happy Birthday! Leroy, I hope the icing was fabulous and that today was as special as you are. Thanks for sharing it, and your life, with us. I am grateful for you that you have peace along with the icing. On today and all of your tommorow's may you have all the peace and comfort...and CAKE that you need.

Oh happy happy belated birthday Leroy! You made me think of my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter. She prefers to swipe her finger through the "choc-it" frosting and avoid the cake completely! I guess no matter our age, some things never change!

I'm writing late so hope that your birthday was a joyful day. Perhaps you can think of another reason to celebrate (with cake and FROSTING) again tomorrow.

It's great to see honesty on a cancer blog. I've been about 15 months treating Stage II Rectal Cancer. I'm committed to transforming our current cultural conversation about cancer from one of fear and dread to a conversation that empowers us all to live our lives to our full potential and love the life we have right now!

Thanks for being such an inspiration!

Happy Birthday Leroy!

Personally I like Birthweeks--24 hours doesn't seem long enough to celebrate. We celebrate the birth and life of YOU!!

I just read your Fridays blog. As I am getting ready for an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant, I thought of a goal for you(beside ALL the incredible books to read).---- It's amazing what I'm learning about Stem Cells and our Immune system. A few weeks before I was diagnosed 2.5 years ago with Lymphoma at 45 it was quite bizarre that I heard a speaker talk about Science developing DNA Vaccines that would "cure"(or begin to cure) cancer in 5 years (2.5 years ago) Now I'm a healthy

Now I wouldn't normally get political or religious here on my comments--but erradicating cancer has become way too personal for me-especially if you are one who LOVEs LIVING! So your beautiful question: What does keep us alive?....I think there are so many things...
Of course Leroy--there are all those places on the planet that could motivate me. The Hawaiian island of Molokai was pretty heavenly to me--I remember when I was there about 7 years ago in the bogs-I knew I could go home and know that there was a heaven on earth.

One of my biggest hopes is that the next Leader of this country (is really a leader) and World leaders will open their minds and policies and pocketbooks to Stem Cell research--and as we think about sending rovers to Mars we also don't forget to keep going inward and finding out how we can get-into the body and heal a pancreas or reverse whats going on in the bone marrow--really take a look at planet earth and all of us amazing creatures. I think there was a pure time in our history that people lived longer happily (not shorter) before diseases. Sorry--I'm on my soap box now...I would like to live long enough to see people quit living in fear, appreciate and clean up our world, and ALLOW a breakthough in cancer research (all diseases for that matter) through Stem cell, molecular, etc...science...and in the meantime dreaming of Molokai and overly kissing my incredible Labrador before my Transplant isolation is enough goal to keep me holding on...I wish you could meet my Yellow Lab HoneyBear. She looks like Marley and Me...Many Blessings to you Leroy and Laurie!! Laurie-your words always bring me comfort and are so poetic. Love,

Happy Birthday! I hope you receive the blessings of health and happiness this year. I don't think any of us thought we would be here (on any of the b-days we are having.) Much love from a fan in the trenches.

Happy Birthday Leroy !!!!!!!!
Each day is a gift for us all. My girl finished her 2 year battle with colon cancer June 13th. I'm happy to say she found her peace. She was a fighter, amazing woman. She too went to Hopkins and her team was phenomenal; such compassion. I very much understand the stress from a caregivers view. I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. I wish you peace, love, and a good day today. GOD BLESS !

Leroy: Happy Birthday! Enjoy that icing.
I have followed your podcast and now your blog since you started them. I don't write often, but I think of you often.
Three years ago I was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. I am one of the lucky ones -- today I am in full remission.
As I have followed your story I have been moved by your honesty and courage. As I listened, I would say to myself, "yes, that's exactly what this is like" or "wow, someone else knows what goes on in my head about this." In telling your story you provide a service to many individuals with cancer and our loved ones who stand through the experience with us. I want to thank you for that service. You made my own journey a bit lighter.
I wish I could do something to make a difference for your health. I know I can't just as you know it. If for a single moment, however, I lighten your mood, bolster your courage, or offer simple witness to your experience, then I have accomplished something. The same something you have accomplished in sharing your life with all of us.
Take care, Leroy.

Happy Belated Birthday, Leroy!!! How did I not know that we shared birthdays?! Here's to cake and icing and many more!

Sent by Melody | 7:16 PM ET | 06-17-2008

Is it that we are Geminis or what? I love icing too!!! That's my favorite part. Eat all you like. I know this note is coming a little after your birthday, but you should still be eating icing days after your birthday anyway.

Sent by Cristina Trapani-Scott | 5:17 PM ET | 06-18-2008

Happy Belated Birthday Leroy! I am another grocery store birthday cake icing-loving Gemini (my b-day was June 12)!! I celebrate the entire month of June, and I observe no limits! I am in Miami, and I am addicted to Publix birthday cakes (yellow or white inside) with copious amount of icing (preferably in the shape of flowers or balloons). I always wait for the corner piece because I'll hit the icing jackpot! I consider myself a fairly conscious eater, but I have no restraint with birthday cake. This year, I will be eating the entire cake... and I'm not ashamed to admit it! I have about two more slices left, but I will share a virtual slice with you. Leroy, please continue to inspire us with your story. As a physician, I have learned so much from your blogs and your commentary. I frequently recommend that my medical colleagues listen to you as well. Again, Happy Belated Birthday, and started working on Birthday 54!
