Raising A Burger In Honor Of Leroy

It's Friday. It's been a tough week of remembering, reflecting, and rediscovering Leroy after his life's celebration on Sunday.

So let's declare today burger day!

So many of Leroy's friends have called this week to say, in his honor, or in his memory, they were having the biggest, juiciest burger they could find.

A dear old friend took her entire family to a place called Five Guys here in Maryland. Leroy loved their double cheeseburgers.

I got a call yesterday from close friends who were driving on the freeway in Southern California. That meant they were in IN-N-Out country ... and yes, they were planning on raising a "double-double" in memory of the big guy.

So many wonderful contributions have been made to Leroy's fund at Johns Hopkins, and to other worthy charities.

But sometimes, all it takes is to eat a great burger and smile. Knowing Leroy would appreciate every last bite.

-- Laurie

It will be a burger day in honor of Leroy. Always a guilty pleasure. Now I have a great excuse. Leroy and his friends are giving everyone permission to savor every delicious morsel. It's a "Leroy Lesson" for zesty living. A favorite funky snack bar in Evanston, Illinois will be the lunchtime spot. The walls and every available surface are decorated with extraordinary kitschy collectibles. Leroy would have loved it.

Oh Laurie,

I have shared with you my rough week as you have adjusted to your "new" life. I will raise a burger for Leroy.

Thanks for the smile this morning.

Yesterday I watched the video from Leroy's memorial service. I had already listened but now I could finally put faces with names. The second time was the same as the first....sad, humorous, uplifting and inspirational. It is rare to get to "know" someone who was larger than life. Leroy was truly larger than life and his legacy now resides with us. Thank you Laurie, Leroy's family and friends for sharing the big guy with us. We are better people because of him.

A toast today is appropriate in honor of Leroy. Of course everyday we should try to emulate his example of goodness and caring for those in need.

Prayers and blessings as always.

Dearest Laurie,
My wife and I were in the Bay area last week, visiting our son and daughter in law who live in Fremont. Last Friday afternoon, this southern boy experienced his first IN-N-OUT cheese burger...delicious. I thought of you and Leroy the whole time we were there eating.

Kind regards and still lifting,

Charles

Laurie,
I'm in! I can't think of a better way to start a Friday night, a good old Sonic Jalepeno burger. So tonight I will raise my burger to honor Leroy. Since this was Neil's favorite burger I will honor him too! I have not had one in one heck of a long time! Maybe I will have that chocolate shake too! Heck with calories!
Love, hugs and continued prayers!

I am grilling out at the lake tonight - I will be sure to have a burger in Leroy's memory. It will be yummy "Michigan beef" for anyone who knows what that is!!! I watched the video last night for the first time. Very moving - what a great tribute that was to LeRoy. Thank you for sharing that with all of us, Laurie.

Oh, that will not be hard to twist my arm to eat a cheese burger. Even easier to do so for Leroy, and for you Laurie.
You are an incredible woman.
Hope you have a peaceful weekend,

To all:
This is a place where so many of have fought, some of us grieve, and so many of us are still fighting. I see the same names of people each day. When I don't see a name for a few days and then a week goes by, I worry about what has happened. This family that Leroy created has become such a safe refuge for so many of us.
So, Eileen Pruyne, JCR....if your out there lurking, let us know your okay. Many here worry about you and I miss your posts!
Sasha, still lifting!
Continued prayers.

Dear Laurie,
It is wonderful that so many of Leroy's friends are there for you to help you remember all the good times. My husband knew a lot of people through his business but unfortunately, we were not personal friends of theirs. I wish I could have them around to regale me with stories and memories. It must be quite comforting.

OH MY! We have a Five Guys here in CT-- I will only go there on a very special occasion, otherwise I might have to go to BAFA (Burgers and Fries Anonymous). Well, this is a very special occasion-- I'll even get the double cheeseburger in honor of Leroy. And if I see anyone else in there sniffing as they chow down, I'll give them the two finger wave.
Here's to the big guy!
Namaste.

Since every small town in Texas has a Dairy Queen (and maybe not much else), you KNOW burgers are important here.
I am thinking of everyone who continues to struggle and to teach in the process.
Yes indeed, I will raise a burger to salute you all and a special remembrance of Leory and all he shared with us unselfishly. And to anyone still recovering from Ike, I send special prayers.

Hi Laurie,
What a good way to remember Leroy. I have always loved hamburgers and In-n-Out was my favorite when I was still in California, however, my grandkids liked greasy Wendys so that is where we usually went. When I was in high school I was a burger flipper at Tastee Freeze. Those weren't great burgers but had a certain taste. Every once in awhile I have a Big Mac attack because they are closest to the Tastee Freeze "taste".
Have a great burger served up with wonderful memories of Leroy.

Dearest Laurie and All,

Laurie, Have a wonderful Friday and the biggest burger you can find! I know the weeks and months ahead will continue to be a challenge, but you are meeting that challenge head on! Your strength is an inspiration to all of us!
I will need a rain check on the burger today due to the after effects of Chemo on Wednesday. But by next week, I will be burger hunting in honor of both you and LeRoy! Hang Tough, Laurie, we are all here with you!!

To Laurie Hirth, Thank you for your concern, it is deeply appreciated! We were off-line for a few weeks due to a crash of our computer hard drive. Fortunately, our son, Dave, works with computers and he was able to come to our rescue. When I call Dave with a problem, I always ask him if I have 24 hour tech support. Then he knows he has a parent problem again. I am doing pretty well between chemo sessions which are every 3 weeks. We seem to be in a holding pattern, the tumors are staying about the same for now. Hopefully, we will make more progress in time. Laurie, I hope that things are getting easier for you. I know that you have had your heart and hands full and it is hard to push on alone. But you are in my thoughts and prayers. And I hope that you can feel the love that surrounds you, too.

To All, Have a wonderful "Burger Day" in honor of LeRoy and Laurie!! And may peace and Happiness light your path this weekend!! God Bless!!

I will raise a burger today. I have enjoyed getting to know you and some of Leroy's real friends (as opposed to us virtual friends) this week. First I listened to the memorial and then really savored the visual once it was added here. I'm glad to finally see you, to be clear that, yes, it was just this past June that you married and to hear all of you honor Leroy after his exuberant life among you. Your blessings to this world and his abound.
Thanks, Eleanor

Usually on infusion Wednesdays, I stop at the Mexican take-out for my bi-weekly indulgence. Spicy food is the only thing I can taste during infusions, and I get enough for dinner and to last for a couple snacks until the 5FU pump comes off.

But this week, for some reason, I skipped the Mexican take-out and went to Quaker Steak and Lube for a burger, their chips, and an order of chipotle-dusted wings.

I'm guessing it's a burger Leroy would've liked--big and juicy, covered with melted swiss, grilled red onions, tomato and pickles, with three strips of pepper bacon and a dollop of some seriously spicy BBQ sauce.

I didn't know it was going to be burger Friday--but it's perfect. Count me in.

Laurie--my strong thoughts to you, every day.

Laurie, your suggestion sounds like a perfect excuse to take my mother into town for a burger.
I was so grateful to be at Leroys' memorial service in spirit via the stream of it on NPR. It was generous of you to include us. What wonderful memories and tributes. Leroy was obviously a kind, caring and generous person to those who knew him. His generosity here was, of course, not an abberation.
It still seems odd to not have him writing here every day, and to only hear that booming voice in retrospect.
I wish you well Laurie. I wish us all well.

Laurie,
I am new to this site but I commend you on your courage during this time. Can I ask a question and maybe you cant address this and it is out of place. Your husband was at a premier institution for his care and received excellent care. What would you do if this was not the case. I know this is stupid question but I am trying to look for answers about how to continue living without a loved one who died and didnt receive good care at all. My mom died at Maimonides medical center in Brooklyn and the care was so horrible. Not only do I have to death with the death of my best friend which is impossible but for the rest of my life, I will be thinking she should not have died such a horrible death due to such poor care. She would have been alive if not for all the mistakes. How can someone go on knowing this. That is wasnt her disease but rather the poor care that killed her. I am beside myself. How would you deal with this?

To paraphrase Homer Simpson, "Mmmmmmmmmmm ... Burgers!" With great pleasure, we'll hoist ours tonight to honor Leroy~

Last weekend, as we drove to and from Montana to see an old and dear friend with newly diagnosed Hodgkins, every time we encountered a Jeep, we offered up the secret wave. (Of course, Leroy the stuffed polar bear was with us, reclining comfortably in the back seat.)

I've never written before but I have popped into the blog occasionally and always listed to Leroy on NPR. Leroy and this wonderful extended family of his helped me make it through the loss of my cousin who was more like a brother to me and my uncle, all within the space of 7 months. I listened to the memorial service and I was so touched. I will miss Leroy's voice and his wisdom. How lucky you are to have been the love of his life and he yours. Bless You and keep writing. You make such a wonderful difference

Yes, indeed! We'll be raising our burgers to Leroy tonight. There's an IN-N-OUT Burger place nearby here in Sacramento, but theirs aren't nearly as juicy and delicious as the ones fresh off our backyard grill. We'll add some swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms, reach over and pick a plump, red tomato from the garden...some chips, a glass of Cabernet...Ahhh! Living in the moment is not half bad.

To all of you who are struggling with cancer or enduring tough treatment or loving and caring for someone who is --you are in my thoughts and prayers today.

To Sharon who commented earlier...I have listened to many of Leroy's radio interviews since he started My Cancer and he was always very thankful that he had good insurance and was able to take advantage of the best medical care. He knew he was lucky and that there were a lot of unlucky ones out there. And that it wasn't fair. I think that his willingness to bring that up during his interviews helps bring the divide to the notice of the policy makers.

In the end, and this is my opinion, it's up to all of us to vote for politicians who are willing to make a difference in this issue.

I listened to the audio of Leroys celebration earlier in the week but watched it tonight. I was as moved by the second as the first. Leroy touched so many lives in a positive way and left behind so many wonderful friends and a wife who loved him unconditionally. I think you must have been an amazing couple. Today was scan day for my husband to see if the brain is behaving itself and as usual his reward was his favorite Mexican place that we have gone to for 30 years but I would have loved to raise a wonderful hamburger to Leroy. The next time I have one it will be with him in mind since I too love a good cheeseburger.I hope you find some moments of peace on this beautiful weekend.

Since I've been left with the inability to eat most "normal" food since my cancer treatment, I have to pass on the burger. But things like burgers and hotdogs and all that delicious bad-for-you stuff is what I often crave. So I'm delighted that everyone here who can eat a burger, will eat a burger for Leroy. I certainly would if I could!

Hubby is in remission and this was a joyful trip where he was able to do more than just rest in the cottage this year. Leroy's journey has emphasized to us the importance of living each day to the fullest.

I've been away from the computer for a few weeks and have missed the daily blog. Thank you so much, Laurie, for continuing to write. I'm going to watch the memorial now.
