The remnants of Leroy's living with cancer, what I call the "bones of cancer," were cleared out of the house quickly. They were metal and plastic reminders of pain and suffering and struggle.
His cancer wardrobe, however, still hangs in his closet. The winter sweatpants, the summer shorts. The easy-on and -off polo shirts that kept him comfortable and feeling "normal." All, still in the closest.
But that's about to change.
Cancer patients never want to look like cancer patients. They want to look like themselves b.c. — before cancer. I guess you'd call Leroy an "easy-fit." He didn't do much to support the suit and tie industries. Cancer didn't change that. In fact, he was wearing a bright blue polo shirt the night he died.
These clothes need to move on now. They've done their job in this house. There are plenty of places where they can provide comfort and warmth ... and be an "easy-fit."
