Gun Control Advocate Erects Huge Anti-NRA Sign

John Rosenthal has a message for people driving on the Massachusetts Turnpike -- and it's one the National Rifle Association won't like.

For years now, the Newton, Mass., resident has placed pro-gun control messages on a huge sign that he owns on the turnpike, just behind Boston's Fenway Park. It's one of the most visible locations in Boston. (One of his past signs read, "Welcome to Massachusetts -- You're More Likely to Live Here," because Massachusetts has "the most effective gun laws.")

His new 252-foot sign, however, is sure to stir up more than the usual controversy. The Boston Globe reports that the sign features what looks like a ransom note -- huge letters that appear to be ripped from a newspaper or magazine. The note reads, "We have your president and Congress - NRA."

Rosenthal, the co-founder of Stop Handgun Violence, has drawn support from Massachusetts' lieutenant governor, public safety secretary and state police colonel, as well as Boston's police commissioner. They will attend a news conference to unveil the billboard today.

NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam, needless to say, is not amused. "The NRA works with members from both sides of the aisle, and we have supporters on the Republican side, as well as the Democratic side," Arulanandam said. "The simple fact is that gun control has been proven to be a political liability."

Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence in Washington, supports the billboard's message. "I'm sure it's going to generate a certain amount of controversy because of the nature of it, but that's good old John. He gets people's attention."

This is nothing special. I see outrageous signage all the time whilst driving down the highway. Particularly in rural areas where the devout feel the need to let everyone know how much Jesus saves.

OMG! Someone shot a person I loved-- Let's blame the GUN!!

No, better: Let's make all guns illegal or as difficult to get as possible, because, you know, that will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

Because, like, it works sooo well in Japan. :P

If gun control has become a political liability, it would only be because of the incredible, self-serving lies perpetuated by the NRA for all these years.
I know of no one on the pro-gun control side who advocates restricting the sales of legitimate hunting rifles, or shotguns. But the NRA tells that exact lie over and over again, and got Charlton Heston to tell it over and over again, and the same people who still think that the current occupant of the White House is a wonderfully effective leader, and that because Charlton Heston is qualified to say anything about this issue buy into the anti-gun control message as well. Pogo Possum still said it best over 50 years ago: "We have met the enemy, and it is us".
Tone down the rhetoric, speak softly and factually, and the issue speaks for itself: we don't need unrestricted access to automatic weapons or to powerful handguns. No one is trying facilitate a Commuist takeover, we would just like to bring some sanity to the issue, and get in step with the rest of the world where our degree of access is unthinkable.

I love the idea, politically as well as artistically, but I find it a bit too commercial and I think the idea of stiring up contraversey through means of a joke is not a good way to present an idea which should be more large scale at this point. I think Mr. Rothenthal should becareful when combining his political and artistic messages but I want to congratulate him on his efforts, as they are so desparately needed.

it would be nice to have our elected representives represent the majority of those who elected them. but instead it appears that many of them are controlled by powerful lobbys. i applaud anyone who speaks out against accesibility of guns in this country.

Re: erickveil.com comments -- Sorry my friend, the issue is that Japan is an example of low gun ownership not translating to low SUICIDE rate (by any means). Their HOMICIDE rate is NOT high. And, in Japan, only a fraction of either is gun-related due to their strict gun control laws. Engaging in typical anti-gun control mis-statement and understatement of facts doesn't serve your argument. The following are two sites you might want to check out for meaningful support of your position -http://www.davekopel.com/2A/LawRev/Japanese_Gun_Control.htm; http://www.guncite.com/gun_control_gcgvinco.html

Andrea: The internet needs more debaters like you: meeting sarcasm with facts and sources, you have a chance to change a mind.

For a more serious point I feel strongly about in this issue: Mr. Monroe states that "No one is trying facilitate a Communist takeover," and I strongly disagree. Being libertarian in nature, I would happily accept less safety in exchange for more freedom. Whether or not we need such powerful weapons is not the point. The point to me is that for every constitutional right we have, there is someone out there who strongly feels we should surrender that right in order to gain a little more security. Should most of them have their way, we would indeed become much worse than a communist state.

I feel it's time we stopped living in fear and started living. Stop surrendering liberty.

a gun is a tool , it's up to the user how to use it and by the way the gun lobby is only preventing the gun control people to do as they wish and end like in the UK

Here's something for you anti-gun nuts to think about: If everyone had a gun, what would be the chances of people being mugged, kidnapped, and/or raped? Criminals would think twice because let's face it, getting shot is not a pleasant thing. Laws to eliminate guns altogether will not help the general masses because, y'know, the criminals are breaking laws as it is. They won't care if, by having a gun, they're breaking another law - they're not obeying laws to begin with, what do they care? The answer is (dramatic drumroll) - they don't. For those of you saying guns are the evil sources of suicide, for another example, I say to you: Come back to reality. As has been stated, a gun is just a tool - the human element is the real weapon. If someone wants to die badly enough, they'll find a way to accomplish it, with or without a gun. As for crime and combat, guns are relatively new to the world of weaponry - humans have been killing each other ever since the first caveman got jealous of his neighbor having a bigger piece of mammoth and beat him to death with the biggest stick he could find. Tools and methods may change, but no matter what you try to outlaw, ways to kill people will always exist, whether you like it or not. Next question, gov'ner.

THEN GET THE HELL OUT OF AMERICA. WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAWY FROM US.

t is ridiculous to blame an inanimate object for a crime committed by a person, if we scrap the gun, does that solve the problem? If we ban the knife, does that heal the stab?

Okay, I want to ship my handguns from Florida to New Mexico.

It can be done, but it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 to ship three handguns in the legal fashion through UPS or FedEx.

At the same time, I can ship shotguns and rifles for around $50, or whatever the weight demands.

I told the nice lady at UPS, "Now don't you just love bureaucracy. With my rifles I can hit a person from a mile away. With my shotguns, I can hit a dozen people with one pull of the trigger. Yet, it costs a bureaucratic bundle to ship a snub-nose .38 revolver."

Democratic Party gun control legislation is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction that got George Bush plenty of votes.

It'll happen again this election.

This is ALL based on the "Culture of Fear".
Those who don't understand "it", will fear "it". Doesn't matter what "it" is!

Those who don't understand science, fear science. The Luddites had a fear of technology. Abortion opponents fear their illegitimate babies are being killed.

Those would never learned "How" to use a firearm, are afraid of those who have firearms. (Media hype doesn't help!)

As far as I'm concerned, if someone wants absolute gun control (and universal healthcare, nanny governments ... etc.) they should be sent to Canada! (By force if need be.)

Sent by Harold | 3:41 PM ET | 02-07-2008

Blame it on Canada, heh, Harold?

The problem with Canada is that a young man can't go there to escape the military draft.

Of course, there is no military draft, and there won't be (unless World War Three breaks out...and then that will be all over with too fast to form a military draft).

So, Canada has a huge shale oil reserve, which is one of the reasons some day soon down the road we will see an Amero currency.

And Canada has a lot of hunting rifles, of all calibers. Cause there's lots of things to shoot there in Canada. A guy I know recently went there and shot a brown bear with a bow and arrow. You can probably club baby seals on an ice floe somewhere in Canada.

Ya know, Harold, all that hype about Canada being gun control is, well, hype. Canadians look pretty well armed to me. They just keep their guns out of sight.

If there was total gun control instituted in America, Americans would buy their guns from Canadians. Much like Americans purchased their liquor from Canadians during the Prohibition years.

Meanwhile, because of bureaucracy, it'd cost $400 to ship a .38 caliber revolver, and about $40 to ship a rifle with a long range scope.

People are getting real tired of useless bureaucracy and overgrown federal government.

Which is why, in the end analysis, the Democratic Party is doomed in 2008.

Oh, wait. The Democrat's idea of solving the gun shipment problem is to ban all guns....so Americans can buy guns illegally from Canadians.

Yeah, I forgot why I, a registered Democrat, finds yet another reason not to trust the blotted Democratic Party ideal of more bureaucracy and deeper pocketed federal government.
