Myanmar Shuts Down Internet Access

The government of Myanmar has cut off the public's access to the Internet. That access has played a major role in allowing us to see images of what is happening during the anti-government protests in the country.

It looks like the government is continuing to violently clamp down on the protests that have drawn thousands of people into the streets, often led by Buddhist monks.

One blog that is still getting some stuff out of Myanmar is Ko Htike's. He's a native of the country, now living in London, who has been posting photos and reports on what is happening since the crisis began.

(Warning: Some of the images on his blog are graphic depictions of the results of the violence.)

Today I'll be serious about my post, as in, this is not a joke. Some may ask, given the current commitments our military is already involved in and an administration and congress that have their hands quite full right now, what we can do about the crackdown on civil rights and liberty by the military dictatorship of Mynamar. Well, not a lot, but there is one thing we can do. Chevron oil has been doing business with that same dictatorship for many years now and it is a country with large natural gas and resources. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has asked the French oil company Total to freeze their investments in Myanmar for the time being and I suspect that Chevron could do the same. Given the history of Chevron in third-world countries, I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Unless, we put pressure on them to withold their money and support for the regime, at least temporarily, as an inducement for the junta to relax their grip on the throats of their people. Some would say that such a move will only open the door further for China to move in, as they've been doing for a while already. I would argue that it's not just a geopolitical issue but a moral issue as well. Essentially, considering that at least some part, however small it may be, of every dollar you spend on Chevron products goes to that same military junta, it becomes a moral question of whether you think your money should be used for that or not. If market pressure is brought to bear, such as a boycott, on Chevron, then hopefull they will do the right thing and withold their business from the Myanmar government and hopefully this will get the junta's attention. Even a letter to them, especially if lots of people write, might help persuade Chevron to take some kind of action. At this point I think it's about all we can do but at least we can do that.

While there is all this shouting and screaming about George Bush curtailing America's freedoms, ironically it is a Democrat who may be most responsible for curtailing America's freedom.

I'm wondering if any of the Bush bashers know anything about Democratic Representative Jane Harman?

I mean, seriously, for all the strident talk about America losing its freedom, someone around here should know who Democrat Jane Harman is, and what eleven other Democrats are doing to potentially curtail America's freedom?

So, okay, among those who have been shouting that the Republicans are curtailing American's freedom, nobody seems to know who is Democratic Rerpresentative Jane Harman.

That, or nobody wants to admit they know.

All the same, here's a hint.

Okay, one more hint on who Democrat Jane Harman is, what she's doing.

Critics have called her the future 'Joseph 'Tailgunner Joe' McCarthy of the Internet.'

Is anyone cathing on?

Bill Clinton was asked if he plans to be Hillary's advisor. Bill replied, "Well, Hill put on the dress she plans to wear at her inaugural, she asked me if it made her look fat. What could I say?"

So, today the bandwagon is Ron Paul. Yesterday it was Mick Huckabee. The day before it was Dennis Kucinich. The day before that it was Hillary Clinton. Tomorrow it will be someone who lands a UFO on the White House lawn.

Meanwhile, the Republicans just keep moving along a steady course, and the Democratic voters just can't figure out why they can't win.

And do you ever notice, there's never an important issue addressed by Democratic voters with any consistency? It's "Hey, let's protest and be different." And when asked what to protest, everyone says the same thing, "Protest everything!" There's never any difference with Democrats except they can't agree on any one thing (except how to shoot themselves in the foot).

Okay, so while Democrats run helter-skelter in a GOP designed maze, accomplishing absolutely nothing except trying to outshout each other........

....we continue to play the 'Who is Jane Harman guessing game."

Another hint:

Current status
This bill has been passed in the House on Oct 23, 2007 with a vote of 404 to 6.[12] Twenty-two representatives missed the vote. The only six representative who voted against the bill were:
-- Jeff Flake, R-Arizona
-- Dana Rohrabacher, R-California
-- Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii
-- Jerry Costello, D-Illinois
-- Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio
-- John Duncan, R-Tennessee [13]
The bill now goes on to be voted on in the Senate

Whoops! There's Dennis Kucinich's name, one of the six who voted against the bill.

Alas, Kucinich was yesterday's hero. Or was he the day before yesterday's here.

Oh, never mind. The Democratic voters will eventually make Kucinich a hero for the day, on another day. Before they change their minds again.

And not a one of them will know who Jane Harman is, or what the bill is about. Not that legislation in Washington is important when you can be making quotidian heroes on an assembly line basis.

Okay, gang, yet another hint to the identity of the mysterious Jane Harman, the Democrat nobody is paying attention to while everyone is focused on George Bush's sleight of hands......

You say those Ron Paul Conspiracy Theorists are nothing but a bunch of atheists?

Not so, brothers and sisters in the almighty fold.

The Ron Paul Kool-Aid for lunch bunch are circulating their own Microsoft prayer for the Xmas holidays.

Have no fear, children of the almighty, if anything, this election is going to be chock full of cheer and conspiratorial hilarity.

The Conspiracy Theorist's Xmas Prayer sent to me by Conspiracy Theory Campaign Headquarters Central:

Dear Lord,

Every single evening, as I'm lying here in bed,

This tiny little prayer keeps running through my head:

Father, bless all my family, wherever they may be,

Keep them warm and safe from harm, for they're so close to me.

And God there is one more thing I pray for You to do;

Hope You don't mind me asking, please bless my computer, too!

Now I know that it's unusual to bless a mother-board,

But listen just a second while I explain it to you, Lord.

You see, that little metal box holds more than odds and ends;

Inside those small compartments are so many of my friends.

I know so much about them by the kindness that they give,

And this little scrap of metal takes me in to where they live.

By faith is how I know them - much the same as You;

We share in what life brings us and, from that, our friendships grew.

Please take an extra minute from Your duties up above,

To bless those in my address book, that's filled with so much love.

Wherever else this prayer may reach to each and every friend,

Bless each e-mail inbox and each person who hits "send".

When you update Your heavenly list on your own Great CD-ROM,

Bless everyone who says this prayer, sent up to GOD dot com

Amen.
