Another Big Turnout for Democrats
Whether it was the closeness of the race or the energy that Democrats have shown in all the primaries and caucuses so far, the Democratic turnout in South Carolina this year was 200,000 more than it was in 2004.
When John Edwards won the state in 2004, just over 291,000 people voted in the Democratic primary. But Saturday night, more than 510,000 Democrats voted. In fact, the 136,000 votes that Hillary Clinton's received would have been more than enough to win in 2004 (Edwards received 131,000) - but it was only good enough for a distant second this year.
In the Republican primary, won by John McCain, 431,000 people voted, a drop of 140,000 from 2000 when 573,000 people participated.
