Mike Huckabee Scores Big In West Virginia
And then, even before we had a chance to take a deep breath, the first result from Super Tuesday is in and it's good news for Republican Mike Huckabee.
Huckabee picked up all 18 national delegates awarded at today's West Virginia's state GOP (caucus) convention. He won out over Mitt Romney (who had the most pledged delegates when the day started). Huckabee, Romney and Ron Paul made appearances at the convention. The first round of voting had Romney on top, with Huckabee in second and McCain a distant third. In the second round, after Paul was eliminated for finishing fourth, the McCain supporters switched to Huckabee in a tactical move to deny Romney the delegates. This gave Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, the victory (52 percent to 47 percent for Romney), and all of the delegates at stake.
The Associated Press reports that Republicans had 1,023 Super Tuesday delegates at stake in 15 primaries, six caucuses and one state convention. The evening began with McCain holding 102 delegates, to 93 for Romney, 43 for Huckabee and four for Paul. It takes 1,191 to win up the nomination.
