Chicago Tribune: Obama Sets a "Standard for Candor"

On Friday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama sat down to talk with the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune. It was a 92-minute discussion in which he talked at length about his relationship with now-indicted businessman Tony Rezko. And the Tribune editors believe that he "offered a lengthy and, to us, plausible explanation for the presence of [Rezko] in his personal and political lives."

"The most remarkable facet of Obama's 92-minute discussion was that, at the outset, he pledged to answer every question the three dozen Tribune journalists crammed into the room would put to him," writes The Tibune in an editorial. "And he did."

During the conversation Obama acknowledged that Rezko had raised more money for his earlier political campaigns than was previously known.

"We fully expect the Clinton campaign, given its current desperation, to do whatever it must in order to keep the Rezko tin can tied to Obama's bumper. When we endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination Jan. 27, we said we had formed our opinions of him during 12 years of scrutiny. We concluded that the professional judgment and personal decency with which he has managed himself and his ambition distinguish him.

"Nothing Obama said in our editorial board room Friday diminishes that verdict."

Obama admitted during the interview that he should have had the discussion 16 months ago, and talked "uncomfortably" about what it's like living in a fishbowl and that he was too eager to "control the narrative."

"Less protection, less control, would have meant less hassle for his campaign," the editorial continues. "That said, Barack Obama now has spoken about his ties to Tony Rezko in uncommon detail. That's a standard for candor by which other presidential candidates facing serious inquiries now can be judged."

I'm a conservative voter who will definitely vote for a democratic candidate this time. For what it's worth (nothing?)I would like to see less attacking and more presenting on everyone's part, not that questioning and examining responses doesn't have its place. I like what appears to be Obama's willingness to respond to accusations.

When it comes to crisis management - an essential quality for Commander in Chief - Obama is right on. He's direct, decisive, clear, forceful and unequivocal. Notice that when McCain was confronted with the Vickie Eisman question, he responded quickly but in sweeping terms that had to be qualified. When Clinton was confronted with Ferarro's embarrasing statements, she was tepid in her response and only yielded after a blazing rant by Kieth Olbermann. Obama wins in my estimation. He knows who he is, he knows what the facts are, he reads the situation correctly and acts with certainty and candor.

A politician is a politician, and Obama has chosen to be one. But unlike most of his colleagues, he recognizes the importance of telling people what the hell is going on. I like his combination of candor and optimism, and that's why I'm sticking with him.

Holy smoke, you cannot be serious. He's currently lying all over the Internet today that he was not aware of Rev. Wright's (Obama's spiritual mentor) controversial sermons prior to his presidential campaign.

Easter is almost here; someone better clue him in on that Easter Bunny B.S. too.

obama is an excellent scrambler and an impressive orator. He knows he has to tell you what you want to hear. The unfortunate thing is you believe him. There is too much controversy surrounding obama especially given what rev. wright has said during his sermons. But, of course you all like obama and have been taken in by his schmoozing so I'm sure you will excuse this as well and say there is no way obama could have been influenced by his ramblings. AND, please don't fall for the line where obama says he never heard him preach like that. Ask yourselves one question, what if this had been Hillary's preacher saying this? Hillary would have been hung out to dry!!!!

Well, thank goodness nobody had to resort to a cattle prod to get Barack Obama to come up with some kind of story to fit the questions that just sat there in the air like cigarette smoke for weeks at a time.

It's kind of like when you ask a guy a question, and he is lying, his eyes roll up toward the upper right side of his sockets. Toward the right, creative side of this brain. Looking for an Orwellian type BIG LIE.

Barack Obama is spending a whole lot of time inside that right frontal lobe of his, seeking creative answers to whatever questions are posed.

That sort of creates even more distrust. Maybe it would have been better for Obama to come up with a quick, not so great lie. Then to wait weeks to hopefully come up with a greater lie...that nobody is going to believe cause he took so long creating his lie.

That Barack Obama guy has got a lot to learn he wants to play against the likes of Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Il.

Linda,
Many of Jeremiah Wright comments are, if not always completely true, at least understandable. This is the argument no politician will make because his comments are controversial but if we did not live in such a ridiculously jingoistic society people could see they have a certain truth from a certain point of view. And please, this is nothing worse than what happened with Sister Souljah and Bill Clinton made a decision and if any thing he got more votes from it. If a Hillary pastor said something like this she would be fine too and you know why, because it isn't that big a deal.

The media blindness on Mr. Obama still continues as the Chicago Tribune calls Mr. Obama, after having interviewed him about his relationship to Tony Rezko, as setting a new standard of candor, the candor that made Mr. Obama look like he was born yesterday with all the innocence and ignorance of a newborn baby, while fully knowing that all this is coming from a man who represented a district from the notoriously dog eat dog world of Chicago ward politics.

Tony Rezko, Jeremiah Wright, the unrepentant ex-terrorist friends of Obama--William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, and their scummy residue on Barack Obama have been out there in the open all along, but most members of the media were afraid of being called racist by Obama camp if they were the first ones to point the dirty spots on Obama. That's why they would have to wait till someone brings the stains up on YouTube and other Internet venues.

"I trusted him (Rezko)," so Mr. Obama says according to the Chicago Tribune interview. Well, so much for his superior judgment skill, which, beside his ability to stitch big words together, has been the only selling point of Mr. Obama's candidacy. Apparently, in spite of his newly proven ability for poor judgment, Mr. Obama still wants people to trust him. Indeed, if Mr. Obama has his way he would have us be to him as he was to Tony Rezko; that is, naive, clueless, and blind. Needless to say, so far Obama admirers are living up to his expectation. They are well advised to stop projecting their hope and yearning on a man they hardly know, especially a man coming out of Chicago ward politics that runs on graft and kickbacks as its fuel.

Mr. Obama is a pushy, cocky, imperious character who will use these attributes to the detriment of the country (and himself in the end) if he were to become the President of the United States. Much of Mr. Obama's vaunted legislative record (all accomplished in a single year) in the Illinois legislature came about as the result of the Democratic Illinois Senate Majority Leader Emil Jones Jr. assigning most of the high profile legislation, which other legislators had been working on, under Mr. Obama's name. And Mr. Obama was brazen and duplicitous enough to take the full credit without sharing any of it with the originators of the legislation.

This is real Barack Obama, the harbinger of new politics and future hope of America. Democrats, nay, all Americans, should be warned that it is not Florida and Michigan voter disenfranchisement (which Mr. Obama, true to his form, is working hard to ensure behind the scene, as if he is back in his good old days in the Illinois legislature) that will be the train wreck that they fear, but the Obama presidency that will be.

I find your title off the mark. If you have done even the most rudimentary of reserch -- you'll know that Obama has been in the game of letting this information come out in dribs and drabs. WRT> Wright -- initially he questioned the messenger -- "cherry-picking his comments". Later it was "an uncle with whom he doesn't always agree". WRT> Rezko -- just plot the amounts and you'll see that it has been steadily increasing in his disclosures since last year. I'm sure there's more to come.

I find it sad that NPR has become Obama-land like so many other web sites.
It is a pity to see us Dems being done in by our own math at this stage -- and our lack of such candor before say.. super Tuesday. We would not be in such a mess -- had this all come out then.

I am an Obama supporter and I believe he will withstand whatever the Republican Party throws at him with grace and dignity. He will win the election???you will see. His remarks in Indiana today, when he quoted Bobby Kennedy's speech in Indianapolis on the day of Martin Luther King's death, struck exactly the right note after a tummultous week of Rovean swiftboat attacks.

What he argued today was exactly what he has been arguing since the beginning of his campaign--i.e., that we need to rise above hate speech; I am betting that America will side with the person who has done the best job of keeping his/her cool under duress and inspiring confidence . Obama knows, my friends, how to reassure us when he is under fire. Just watch. The more he is vetted by all of this the more presidential he looks, the more reasonable he acts. He has remarkable courage, grace, and fair-mindedness. He will show the same sort of commitment to democratic values and respect for human dignity to intractable haters like the Palestinians, the Sunnis and the Shiites. If you think what his Pastor had to say about America is bad, tune in to Al Jazeera.

Rev. Wright???s version of hate speech is typical among ethnic groups who have suffered at the hands of others. Listen to what Armenians have to say about the Turks, read what Native Americans had to say about European settlers. My Jewish father-in-law hated the Poles and the Germans. It goes on and on. Obama doesn???t defend any of this, he wants to end it!

I grew up in Northern Minnesota listening to another kind of hate speech; its proponents loved guns, drove pick-up trucks, and ridiculed me because I got good grades in high school and hated the Viet Nam war. They used their patriotism to bludgeon anyone who criticized the U.S. and its foreign policy. Today I recognize that particular form of hate speech on right-wing talk show radio.

Go ahead, fire away, hate speechers. We shall overcome.

Ok, now we have disected this story in so many small little minuscule parts that there isn't anything left of it. I don't think there is anything nefarious in the relations between Obama and Tony Rezko. There is no evidence that Obama is either involved or that he knew about Tony Rezko' s illegal activities. But maybe the media, and Hillary supporters, might want to take a closer look at the relationship between the Clintons and Peter Paul. In the name of full disclosure, which apparently the Clinton and Obama supporters alike are thirsty of, maybe it would be interesting to have Clinton's side of the story on the Peter Paul affair and the money he raised for her when she was running for NY Senate. I was shocked by the videos I watched on YouTube and the bloggs I read on the story.

regarding sub prime loans and forclosures. Hey did you see how fast the Feds came up money for Bear Sterns.

With Barack Obama, you start to ask yourself if Chicago Candor is not the same as Chicago Amnesia.

Between Tony Rezko and Jeremiah Wright, is there anyone left that Barack Obama remembers from his past?

You can see Jeremiah Wright speak his own words on this MSN Video. Be sure to pass it around to your family and friends who happen to love America.

I'm tired of deeply opinionated politicians who already know absolutely everything in the universe before it happens. Obama reminds me of JFK in that he brings the possibility of actually thinking through a problem before he knee-jerks to a pre-formed solution that fits some old used mold. He is the antithesis of Bush in that respect. Hillary is less free thinking, and McCain, I'm sorry, but he's just all wrapped around fixing one Bush screw-up. He's just too tired and old to do this job. So, it's going to have to be Obama. Still, who knows what any of them might do?

Come out of the universities with a huge debt on their heads, become a bonded laborer for life, slog his/her butt out, and when the cronies wage war lying all over about WMD, just shut up and go to war, because thats all you are fit for! Either as bonded laborers or as sacrificial goats! You have no right to HOPE nor to CHANGE! We cronies shall decide! Omy Ghosh!

It is so easy to pass judgement on an individual based on what has been preached in a sermon, just because that individual belongs to that Church.

Fox and ABC decided to release and broadcast few minutes and snippets of that sermon because it was "negative" and they had nothing else to release or insinuate against Obama this was their idea of a "smear campaign". Why didn't they broadcast some of Rev. Wright's "positive" sermons? Afterall he has been a pastor and preaching for around 35 odd years. Why haven't they mentioned that Rev. J. Wright is an ex-marine and was also a "Nurse" who treated injured soldiers during the war? Of course they didn't because that would be contradictory to what they want the good people of the USA to know!

Barack Obama himself stated I am human and have made mistakes and will still make some, so guess what people that man is just like you and me - HUMAN. He does not condone the things mentioned in those sermons and has condemned what the Rev said, time to move on and look ahead the country is in crisis and needs a new leader with strong values and changes ready to put USA back on track and in #ONE spot around the world.

God Bless you Barack Obama we love you..

I don't understand what difference it makes what a man's pastor says. Pastors and other religious folk say a lot of silly things, like how the earth is only a few thousand years old and that god put the dinosaurs on earth for us to question our faith. If you have an education and half a brain you know those things aren't true. People's friends say a lot of silly things, too, but most of us don't judge people on what their friends say. Well, I guess high school kids do, but we're not high school kids, are we? Based on some of your comments, I'm sorry to say that it looks like some of you are.

It seems what passes for innocent "candor" in Obama's camp is more like good 'ol fashioned, strategic planning. This is a POLITICAL CAMPAIGN! And a loaded one at that. This guy has David Axelrod working for him, and this is the best form of damage control one could hope for. I do not buy the innocent, "deer in headlights" appearance of this candidate. Nor do I buy the idea that race was never a part of the Obama campaign's strategy. What about equality for all? Has he even really mentioned New Orleans? Or anything tangible for that matter?

They have run a tight ship, and run it well, I give them props for that. But lets not be so naive in buying their very well-crafted naivety. It is not genuine. There is truth to the idea of the new generation vs. the old, and that is the generation of political tactics. But the goal is the same, and there are tricks of the trade. He does not have a long political history to scrutinize, so he can "invent" one out of "hope". And the one he does have, he is obscuring, and/or countering with, "Well, I just didn't know any better at the time". That is not very reassuring. This does not show this fantastic judgement he claims to have. I am not very interested in voting for a social or spiritual guru that plays on individual's emotions, considering that our country is a very real crisis.

Sen. Obama has yet to answer any real questions about himself, where he came from, who he is, and what he really stands for. Is he ashamed of his mother, and her heritage? He certainly embraces one idea of his lineage over the other. If it is not an "issue" why is it so hush-hush? We live in a complex time, and he has enjoyed this polarization immensely, it is apparent. It should not matter, but when you profit in a polarized campaign, it does. His naive, hands-off stance is adolescent.

Politically, (which is what should really matter) he has yet to really define policies, or prove that he has any policy experience (except for his laughable health-care, and leaving no-child left behind tweakily intact).
And now he is the poster child for the entire civil-rights movement. Does anyone else find this creepy?

I, for one, do not have the sneaking suspicion that if I do not vote for him that I am racist. My love of humanity is not dependent on my vote for this candidate, no matter what his campaign is trying to subtly or not so subtly infer. If he can get to the points that matter, he should, and quick. Because if he wins the nomination, no amount of blithe ego will insulate him from his very open weak spots, and that is exactly where the Repugs will hit him.
And glowing photoshopped websites will not save the day in that instance.

Looking toward the general election, why would anyone, anywhere even consider letting McBush or any Republican continue to "govern" us? They've screwed up everything they've touched (foreign policy, education, science policy, the economy, energy policy) while trampling on our Constitutional rights, torturing people, thumbing their noses at Congressional oversight, and exempting themselves in general from the rule of law and accoutability for their actions. (Did I mention starting and perpetuating an illegal, immoral war of choice?) I'm still undecided between Obama and Clinton, but either would be infinitely better than McBush.

I was thinking "hey, NPR, usually a very sound bunch - good thoughtful listeners" but after some of the vitriol that has spilled over onto the blogs here, I would think I had stumbled into a herion den in Harlem circa 1970's. Honestly gang, there is more civility on the partisan blogs then here. I'm losing my internal compass of perspective in this election with the enormity (and banality) of the issues that have become important. If decent liberals have succumbed to the Rovian slander techniques of the likes seen on the FOX network - then you will reap the kind of world that you sow. I won't offer any advice because the walls of the blogosphere are closing in, and it looks like it won't be very pretty when all is said and done this political season, especially if you're a democrat...

Punctuated equilibrium is the theory that new species arose during times of great environmental change in a very short period of time. Is there an equivalent theory in politics to give rise to new political parties?
