McCain Wants to Win in California in the Fall
For the past 20 years, California has been such a blue state that it 's almost azure. But now USA Today's OnPolitics blog reports that Sen. John McCain believes that his stance on issues like global warming and the environment and his support from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger give him a good chance at bringing the state back into the GOP column.
Senior adviser Steve Schmidt, a former aide to Schwarzenegger, said California "is closer to being a purple state than a blue state." He said McCain's appeal to independents also gives him a chance in other states normally thought of as Democratic. According to the Almanac of American Politics, in the 2004 presidential election, Democrat John Kerry won Washington, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine and California with at least 53% of the vote.
Even if McCain can only force the Democrats to spend valuable funds and resources in a state they normally take for granted, it could go a long way to helping him pick up enough electoral college votes to win.
