Two Democratic Governors Offer to Fund Do-Overs
Democratic leaders continue to negotiate over ways to resolve disputed primaries held in Michigan and Florida. Now Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell and New Jersey governor Jon Corzine have come forward with an offer to raise money to help finance do-over voting.
The Rendell-Corzine proposal would go half-way toward settling one big question: how to finance the do-overs. By one estimate, total cost of re-doing both states' primaries would be around 30 million.
Michigan and Florida Democrats voted in January, ahead of schedule, even after the Democratic National Committee refused to sanction the contests. Now the D-N-C doesn't want to siphon money away from the general election. And Michigan and Florida don't want to spend tax dollars for a second go-round.
Hillary Clinton beat Barack Obama in both states' unsanctioned primaries. Now, the Democratic National Committee is negotiating with the campaigns and the two states.
Besides money, another obstacle is the logistics, of quickly setting up new procedures for Democrats to vote.
