'Brown v. Board' School May Avoid Demolition
Though preserving the Sumner School is proving costly for the city, the group said it won't allow city officials to destruct the now-empty art deco building.
Demoliotion was approved to begin this week, but the historical society says a previous agreement safeguards the school until 2012.
In 1950, Sumner School officials turned away a black minister who tried to enroll his daughter. The family filed a lawsuit which later brought about school desegregation.
