Teach for America Alumna to Head D.C. Schools

Michelle Rhee

The new chancellor for Washington, D.C.'s public school system is on her way in.

At 37, Michelle Rhee is the youngest the city has ever had, and she was tapped last week by D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty.

She got her start working in the Baltimore public schools, as part of Teach for America -- a group that trains young teachers and places them in troubled city schools.

All eyes will be on Rhee as she tries to turn the city's struggling system around.

man, i wanted to work for them. I went through the teaching test and their extensive interview process. but they did not accept me (Teach for America that is). a wonderful program. they start you off as a teacher and from there you can jump into their admin programs to help change policy.

A friend of mine with a Chemistry degree and med school leanings made the leap to teaching thru TFA. In a few short years, she has moved from trainee to teacher to TFA trainer to assistant principal. TFA helped her find who she was always meant to be and gave her the avenue to share her gifts with our children.

I wish Ms. Rhee success in her new charter.
