The Mos Def / Brother West combination was totally enthralling. There has been no historical precedence to this combination that comes to mind right away; Dr. W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey being interviewed by Mark Twain?
I mean it was like Black intelligentsia and Black Street smarts dropping science to an almost-there populist.

These guys have got to take this on the road -- or at least make an extended DVD presentation with commentary tack -- no wait, they are current America's commentary trackers.

I must admit that I am surprised to hear such a negative reaction to Mos Def and Professor West from your entire panel. I personally enjoyed seeing them both, and I thought Mos Def reflected the thoughts of a lot of black people that I know - including myself. I think that Mos Def could have easily put on his radio voice and a sports coat and went on so as not to embarrass some of the more bourgeoisie members of the community. But he chose to "represent" and speak in the language of the black youth, like the ones whose cause that he championed in Jena. I also think that he made some serious points; there should be more critical analysis of our policies and the propaganda that is routinely pitched via the news media. I think that was his point -- just asking people to use their brains. I think it was a breath of fresh air to have someone a little less polished than the normal fair who didn't feel the need to watch what he said and who wasn't a right wing conservative.

Not to be the Obama stan but Mos def was off in his assertion that the Senator hasn't said much about New Orleans. He in fact has the most thorough and comprehensive policy proposals on rebuilding post Katrina.

Mos Def is a conspiracy nutcase, even though I used to love his music, should keep to rapping. Cornel West was being very restrained and somewhat obsequious towards Mos def, I guess trying to hip so as not offend the "hip hop" generation.
As I am concerned, they should bring blacks with diverse opinions who show that not all blacks are light wing pro democratic party types. Some of us are independents.

In reference to the NPR News and Notes program aired on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 12, I feel I must express indignation against Ms. Chideya and her panel of guests. I am speaking specifically of the disparaging remarks made about rapper Mos Def's commentary on last week's Real Time with Bill Maher show. Mos Def said something to the effect that he didn't believe that Mr. Osama bin Laden instigated the Sept. 11 attacks and Ms. Chideya, Prof. Michael Fauntroy, Mr. David Mills and Ms. Gina McCauley dismissed him for rambling nonsense and "confusing the general public." And then they went ahead to list more suitable black candidates, according to their definition, who should have been invited to the show. Now, I would like to propound the theory that it is this kind of backward elitism that is contributing heavily to misinformation in this society.
Mos Def, wittingly or unwittingly, raised a point that, had it been fully addressed at the onset of the terror crisis, tens of thousands of lives would not have since been laid to ruin or extinguished altogether. The point itself is the factor of doubt. Everyone knows that there are a lot of unanswered questions revolving round the 9/11 incident. But just because our illustrious, high ranking leaders and media marionettes stand side by side in delivering a scripted story, are the rest of us supposed to swallow it all in silence? People who went to school and took their education seriously call that kind of blind trust the fallacy of authority. So, am I saying that conspiracy was afoot? Yes! I don't doubt that Mr. bin Laden had a lot to do with the plot to kill Americans, but every time the issue arises, we must also ask questions and demand answers on the role that certain US government officials played before, during and after the event. Now that we have the benefits of hindsight, it is absolutely irresponsible to encourage people to sit back and say "Osama bin Laden did it."
Would American Statesmen and Stateswomen ever do anything to harm citizens of their country? Let us remember that in the days of slavery on this continent, as there were white slave-owners, so were there black slave-owners. Let us remember that less than a century ago, a fiend called Hitler turned German citizens against each other in an inconceivable genocide. Let us remember the fiasco that was the response to the pleas for help by the victims of hurricane Katrina just two years ago. No, the United States is not impervious to the madness and callousness that grips people reveling in unprecedented wealth and power. I am therefore appalled that even though Ms. Chideya and her panel, and Mr. Maher are aware of these things, they had neither the prudence nor the sense of responsibility to open up this critical point, if only to caution citizens to be wary of authority figures and demand the whole concise truth at a time when it is most clear that lies and corruption have taken root in the core of their government. It is they who are the biggest players in confusing the public because it is they who apparently dance (wittingly or not) to the drumbeat of the powers that are causing needless misery in people???s lives.
I therefore challenge these people and their contemporaries not to be blinded by the facades of post graduate degrees and new books, or be constrained by the accepted scripts in order to appear rational. A lot of people have the ability to pick up advanced degrees and everyone seems to have a new book these days; anyone can be a critic but what we are in need of is critical thinkers. There has not been an original and revolutionary idea in the social sciences for decades and society is suffering for it. The untold wealth and technology wielded by a small group of people is not an indication of a golden age. We know this because our institutions are ailing and millions of people are struggling in this country and around the world. Indeed, because people like Ms. Chideya, and her esteemed guests choose not use their knowledge and influence with humility, unimpeded objectivity, and caution, tallying the figure since the 9/11 attack, over 4000 Americans consigned to the horrors in the Middle East have died.

The Angry Black Women has a new definition; it's Gina McCauley. "Auntie O"? Could you be more condescending to someone who has and will accomplish more for PEOPLE (Black people, included), than you will have time to complain about.

No surprise Barack would get no consideration from you, being a Black Man and all, he of course should have the bar set higher than anyone else, right. And yes I watched the clip that set you off. Obama has spoken about sentence disparity in the past, and whether you believe Genarlo or the girls, the sentence is not proportional to others. That's the issue. You missed the forest, looking at one tree.

Nuance; you know, that thing you and George Bush lack? Everything is not Black and White, and for a 10 second comment, THAT CANDIDATE is worthy of your rant. Using that yardstick, it was easy for the majority of Americans to vote for Bush, "because I could have beer with him," or "he believes like I do," or "I agree with him on the Gay thing." The world is much more complex than that. Forest. Tree.

Farai, I tune into NPR for reasoned discussion, you're slipping. If you give air to the shrill and sensation-seeking voices, then you might as well co-host with O'Reilly.

Urrrggh... that was my immediate reaction in listening to your bloggers roundtable contributors "discuss" the appearance of Cornell West and Mos Def on "Real Time With Bill Maher." For a moment there I thought I was listening to Fox News. They all sounded rather unfortunately dismissive of all that was said, and failed to digest the overall message being disseminated by both gentlemen; and they all sounded a little sour that they aren't being called upon to speak in "representation of black people" in this country. This type of unnecessary faux elitism stinks of shameless self-promotion by all of them, rather than a true concern for any real change... or it could be just an overwhelming lack of compassion, understanding and even ignorance, which only demonstrates just how much of a gap we still have to bridge within the Diaspora.

Also, I'm not sure how your panelist got the impression that Cornell West's "love" for Obama is a sure thing. It certainly wasn't evident in the clips from Bill Maher's show. In relation to me referring to Oprah Winfrey as Auntie O... I consider Oprah a part of my family. I grew up with her, many of us did, but I figured after the show that those who wanted to attack the substance of my arguments would probably latch on to that and so be it. You can't win them all. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Oprah and as someone who blogs about Black women using their economic power to affect change, her fund raiser for Obama is the epitome of using that kind of power. I don't blog politics, the only reason I put up a link about the fund raiser was because I continue to be amazed that no one has questioned Senator Obama about his characterization of the facts of what happened in that Douglassville, GA hotel room on that New Year's Eve.

This is not a case of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo did not pass Juliet around to five of his buddies while capturing it all on camera. Romeo didn't videotape himself having sex with a 17 year old girl who was either a) drunk or b) unconscious depending on who is describing the tape. I am all for having an argument over the length of Wilson's sentence, but an 8th amendment argument does not require that you sanitize the facts as I believe Senator Obama did. What is worse is that the audience that he was in front of was probably not familiar at all with the Genarlow Wilson case, but now they think it is a case about star crossed lovers, a "young man having consensual sex with his 15 year old girlfriend." I think that is inaccurate and unnecessary. The argument about his sentence does not require that Wilson be made out to be the only victim in this case.

Somewhere out there there is a girl who at the age of 17 years old says Mr. Wilson and his buddies gang raped her. A reasonable person could easily conclude that the video corroborates that. Somewhere there is a girl who at 15 was drawn into this whole mess and has since received death threats and God knows what else. So if asking "What About The Girls?" makes me "angry", then I wear it as a badge of honor because if you aren't angry too, you haven't been paying attention.

I knew I was committing heresy by not following the party line on the Genarlow Wilson case and pointing out the YouTube clip of Senator Obama, misleading, in my opinion, a group of folks who didn't know very much about the case. I can hold my head up high knowing that when the whole world turned their backs on these two girls, I at least said something. Genarlow Wilson is not the only person to suffer in this case.

I have always hoped that as the father of two girls, that his description of the case was based on a bad briefing by his staffers than his belief that it is okay to make foolish 15 year old girls the entertainment for older boys at a drug and booze infused party.

Wow. Some of you guys are getting way to deep with this. At the end of the day the bloggers chose to be put off by the presentation of Dr. West and Mos Def and did not pay much attention to their message. I will agree that is very disingenuous and annoying.

By the same token some of the responses here seem to imply there is some sort of lost unity of thought black folks should be seeking. That is equally annoying. We have never been totally unified. When will we stop being upset because other blacks they think differently?

Regarding the actual clip, I felt Mos Def on the "two Americas" bit. However, he lost me with his conspiracy theories and his comparison of the Black Panthers to Al Qaeda. He lost his credibility with that one. And while I respect West his responses are very predictable.

TR - I for one am not implying that the community should all think the same. I am stating that Mos Def should not have been criticized for not thinking like the members of the round table - and for the entire round table to apparently believe that he should not even have had a voice on the show.

I also think he was completely accurate in comparing the Black Panthers to al-Qaeda. In the 60???s the FBI branded the Panthers the ???greatest threat to the internal security in the country??? and systematically set out to destroy the organization by assassination (Fred Hampton) or imprisonment ??? without benefit of a trial, or in the event of a trial with falsified evidence (Geronimo Pratt). George Bush has branded al-Qaeda the ???greatest threat to world security??? and has assassinated and imprisoned thousands without the benefit of trial, or the presentation any evidence that they have committed any crime. It appears pretty similar to me.

I find it remarkable that someone of Chideya's supposed pedigree would allow McCauley to get away with her comments about Wilson without referencing her background.

Gina MCcauley is a virulent anti-Black eugenicist who views Black men as being damaged beyond repair and the vast majority of Black women to be genetically inferior to her. To the latter, she has gone so far as to describe herself as being melineated instead of Black to express her superiority.

To top this off she advocates that melineated woman need to breed with everyone beside Black men to keep the gene pool pure.

At the end of the day I find it remarkable and rather pathetic that any self-respecting Black woman would rally around McCaulley as an advocate for them and their daughters.

that is a lie. You are speaking about comments by another female blogger and yes, I read her site. And Yes, I comment on her site, but I have never cosigned any statements about Black men being damaged beyond repair.

Nor am I going to be cowed by you and your organized campaign to threaten and intimidate any African American female blogger that dares to link, read or comment on the sites of other African American blogger site that you don't like.

you are speaking of Evia's sites. I don't see anything wrong with reading and commenting on a wide variety or opinions even those I don't agree with. you ought to try that sometimes.

And I think that the practice of ignoring you and your organized group who have targeted African American female bloggers for threats of physical violence, libel, and quite frankly internet stalking should be exposed.

You will never find any of the comments you have attributed to me anywhere because i have never made them. I think you are mischaracterizing Evia's comments, but Evia can defend herself.

You and your collaborators and your organized campaign of threats and intimidation are the ones who should be investigated and you are.

Might I also add that this organized campaign of threats and intimidation being carried out by Sergeant Jefferson and his allies is another form of violence against women. Because I refused to remove a link to Evia's blog from WAOD back when they demanded it in May of this year. I and other African American female bloggers who blog about any number of unrelated subjects have been targeted. I wrote about the beginning of the campaign launched against me, but I don't get nearly as much hate mail and threats as other African American female bloggers who blog about other subjects.

Evia has had to involve law enforcement in the wake of this organized campaign and I will leave up a link to her site as a sign of solidarity. Not because I agree with her even half of the time, but because I find the campaign against Evia and other African American female bloggers morally repugnant and a threat to democracy.

I say PLENTY for you to be offended about. No need to put words into my mouth that I just didn't say.

Kerry I hear what you are saying. The problem with comparing the treatment of the Panthers to the treatment of Al Qaeda is the implied comparison of their purpose and tactics. That is where I have a problem.

The Panthers were a party for self defense. They did not carry out murder on thousands of innocent people for the sake of making a point. A comparison like that belittles the circumstances that gave rise to the Panthers and their natural human reaction to defend themselves.

That is the angle I am looking at it from. With regard to their motivation and mission Mohamed Atta and Bobby Seal have nothing in common. In fact, it is disrespectful to Mr. Seal and others to compare what they trying to do to what Al Qaeda is doing now.

I have an organized campaign against you?

The great thing about blogs are that they are interconnected to a large degree. I got referred through Afronerd and Racalicious about WAOD as a progressive blog and one that should be admired. When I get to the site I am introduced to your use of scapegoating and personal attacks on numerous individuals.

If BET, VHI and MTV all ceased to exist from this day forward do you really believe that would improve the levels, of literacy, college enrollment and graduation in Black communities? Would that remove the issues of sexism and "misogyny" that have existed in any patriarchy since the beginning of time?

I don't understand why people like yourself and your "followers" are so preoccupied with the fictional portrayals of violence, sexism and "misogyny" instead of the reality of these issues in our communities.

To my making false statements about you, the answer to that is very simple. The links are readily available and people can see your comments in their full context under the name Synamon. If anyone can read your comments and not see you as an anti-Black eugenicist then I would love to hear their reasoning behind it.

The Mos Def, Pro. Cornel West, compo was very interesting.I have heard of Mos Def, but really did not know who he was, since I do not keep up with the hip-hop world.Mos Def as a street corner intellect was on point, with a lots of his comments, & way off on others, like Obama & Al Qaeda.

What i really enjoyed was getting a chance to see & hear a cross generational conversation with two black men.

TR -- That was not Mos Def's point. His point was that the government hyped the Panthers up as the bogey man in order make the American public believe that they were a larger threat than they actually were, which would justify Hoover's treatment of them -- and it was his belief (as well as mine and apparently Colin Powell) that the Bush administration is doing the same with al Qaeda. The Bush administration now uses al Qaeda (or interchangeably "terrorism") to use as an excuse for everything that they do, including the invasion of Iraq. The fact of the matter is that there is no evidence that al Qaeda is really that much of a danger to this country. But George Bush mentions them every time he gets in front of a microphone. His "fight them there or we will have to fight them here" mantra is an example of this. Do you believe that? The vast majority of the people that are fighting the US in Iraq are Iraqi's who have absolutely nothing to do with al Qaeda, and they are fighting "us" over there to drive "us" back over here.

Btw -- I believe that it is Osama bin Laden's view that he is defending Islam and his goal is to remove the house of Saud from power in order to protect Mecca. He views the US government as propping up a corrupt Saudi government (as well as others in the Middle East) and his actual goal is the overthrow of that government to expel foreign troops from what he considers sacred land. He also blames the US for the deaths and oppression of millions of Muslims around the world. I do not think he has done anything just to make a point. I think he has a strategy and that he has played George Bush into a corner.

My comments are for the Blogger's roundtable discussion of Oprah's endorsement party for senator Obama. Why did Gina McCauley used the "Auntie" oprah phrase when you gave your opinion of what she did for him? Do we hate ourselves as a race of people(African-Americans)that we have to describe a successful person with the old stigma of "Uncle Tom or Aunt sallie or Aunt Jemimia". Or is it the we are elous of each others accomplishments.

Bill Maher is a gatekeeper by trying to marginalize the thruth movement which continues to grow. Anyone who does their own research or just uses logical can begin to see the lies and contradictions being presented as an official version of what occured that day. I would ask anyone to not only be skeptical of government, but be skeptical of anyone or any organization posing as dissending voices or any alternative outlet claiming to be defenders of democracy who have not asked critical questions; they too are advancing the gatekeeping agenda to misinform us the war, government, the federal reserve, the war on drugs.... The federal reserve... allow me to back up to that. I urge anyone who reads this to look up who owns the federal reserve and you will understand why we have recessions, why the dollar looses value and why 9/11 happened. If NPR let's allows this to posted will be a miracle... and not the godly type. Concrete and steel buildings don't pulverise from jet fuel (which blew away from the building on inpact) in 9 seconds collasping in its own footprints. Stop being fed by these gatekeepers and use your mind.

Readers of the News and Notes blog, you have witnessed a historic event. Jefferson Sargeant's libelous post marked the day that this group made one attack too many and forced me finally to ignore them and respond.

I won't pollute the NPR blog with Black Blogoshere business, but needless to say that there has been a persistent campaign by some Black male bloggers to threaten and intimidate African American female bloggers. Some of these men merely moved their previous stalking activities to blogs and used blogs to continue stalking Black women who they had been after prior to the woman starting a blog.

I began to be attacked after I made the mistake of commenting and providing a link to a Black female blogger who is quite frankly one of the most terrorized bloggers in the Black blogosphere. I am talking having to involve law enforcement. Early on, when my blog only had 40 page views a day, they targeted me for linking to her blog on my blog, but they were dismissed. As my blog's profile grew, their behavior towards me escalated.Including crafting these lies that i said something I did not say.

Viacom employees, including BET's President, Reginald Hudlin, helped to disseminate these libelous statements on his message board and Jameela Donaldson printed a letter from these people on her website and myspace page.

What Viacom didn't know was that these people don't like BET either, they just hate my blog MORE so in continuing a campaign they began long before WAOD was mentioned in a single paper, they provided these false statements to Viacom employees, and those employees publicized them without bothering to check if they were true.

Again, I don't want to go into too much detail on the NPR board because they will come here too. But I have posted on the "Violence" committed against African American female bloggers by this group on WAOD. I knew it was bad, but I didn't know how bad it was until other female bloggers who read my post started coming out and saying "me too" you can read their experiences in the comments.

I don't mind disagreements and debates, in fact, I enjoy them, but these folks don't want to debate, they want to destroy. I have at least one report of stalking going back 10 years. So this isn't about WAOD.

I've been targeted because I made the mistake of interacting with these men's victims.

In speaking out at this point, I hope more women come forward with their stories.

I am not a victim. I just ignored these people for months because I had more important work to do, but their behavior is escalating so I thought now was the time to speak out and I am glad that I did.

Kerry, I understand that was not Mos Def's point. He was talking about the treatment of both groups by the U.S. government, not comparing the purpose and aim of those groups. I get that part. And I agree whole heartedly the Bush administration is using Al Qaeda as an excuse to do all sorts of unethical and illegal things. I just think it was a bad comparison on Mos Def's part. It indirectly implies a similarity of purpose between the groups. It makes it easy for someone who is ignorant of the Panthers (and that is most Americans) to draw a parallel between two groups that have nothing in common other than the fact they were and are enemies of the state.

As far as Bin Laden's reasons for what he does, that is another issue.

I wondering with all the coverage on Jena 6 your doing have you all even considered doing anything about the situation that happened in Dunbar village in Florida. I know it happened a while back but it seems like NOBODY covered it. I heard about it through word of mouth - Then i researched it on the internet. It looks as if we cant blame white folks for something then it wont get coverage. What happened to that woman and her son was horrific and it seems nobody cares.

I would like to comment on a few issues from the roundtable. First, I am surprised that with a table full of intellectual black folk nobody could clearly state the difference between the Michael Richards rant and Eddie Griffin's use of the "n word". Simply put Richards use of the word was clearly for no other purpose than to cause insult. To cause further injury he knowingly made historical references about the abuse we used suffer at the hands of white people. Need I remind you of his quote "40 years ago you would have been hanging from a tree with a fork in your ass." This was just one of the many racist rants he made during that show. It's a shame that the white media missed it but to have you all miss that point too is down right sad.

Secondly, I can't say I agree with Gina regarding the Genarlow Wilson case. I do consider myself an advocate for women's rights but I'm also a realist. I call a square a square and a circle a circle. Douglasville is my hometown and I can say that there as well as the rest of the world there are girls and women with morals as well as without. She did consent to having sex. Perhaps Barack used to wrong wording, but we are all thinking people and can read through the lines. This is a miscarriage of justice because this boy did not think participating in a mutually desired sexual activity with someone he sees in his high school hallways every day was a crime. We all understand the facts of the case don't we? Gina, while I fully respect what you are doing with your blog, you have to pick your battles to win the war. I agree Dunbar Village definitely needs more attention.

Lastly, I would like to comment on the discussion of Mos Def. While I did not see the entire show a clip was put on my myspace page (by a real friend). Don't be so quick to throw out the baby with the bathwater. While I don't agree with everything Mos had to say I think it can be agreed that our government is capable of shady and underhanded acts. You are quick to call Mos crazy, however in the last 5 years our government has invaded and destabilized a country, dismantled the infrastructure, helped to execute its former dictator, killed scores of Iraqi civilians and American soldiers, all the while changing the reason for mission as often as Lindsay Lohan goes into rehab. I'm no conspiracy theorist but as I said before I call a square a square.

the whites aren't the only racist here. The black contributed in upholding the clause of racism. They are all to be blamed, though only the blacks are being sentenced. "A nation divided agaist itself shall not stand" were the words of Abraham lincoln. As long as we can't see past the great wall of color, we we all be racists. And instead of coming together as a natio, We are forming rivals. We can only go backwards with this attitude not forward.

Pastor McClurken I think he's position on gays comes from his stuggle to change his own life. I don't know if it is not more self hate than anything else. It seems that the gay community would empathize with his struggle and recognize it for what it is.
On the other hand I can't help but wonder why Gina McCauley is invited back to your show so often, she is very hostile and rude blowing while other guest were talking she doesn't add anything positive to the discussion and has convinced herself that she is the only one that has the answer. She puts herself out as the voice for women she's the voice for the image of black women we are trying to get away from - angry and mean spirited. I hope she's not back I've heard more than enough of her vicious exchange.
