Talk About It:
Fox News: Obama Declares Truce -- "Minutes after he told voters at a Reno, Nevada, rally that his opponents were trying to 'run [him] down,' Senator Barack Obama held a media availability today to declare truce with his main competitors -- Senators Clinton and Edwards. But mainly Senator Clinton.

'I think over the last couple days you've seen a tone on the Democratic side in the campaign that I think is unfortunate,' he stated. 'I may disagree with Senator Clinton or Senator Edwards on how to get there, but we share the same goals. We're all Democrats. ... I don't want the campaign at this stage to degenerate into so much tit for tat back and forth that we lose sight of why we are all doing this.'"

Do you think either side will respect this "truce" and move beyond the issue? Who do you think will win South Carolina, and how will it affect the outcome of other primaries?

The campaign has to differentiate between candidates by mincing words and statements and making mountains out of molehills. Hillary may have said some things that could be questionable regarding MLK and President Johnson but I think her overall intent over the years has been as supportive of our Afro-American brothers and sister as a person can be. Obama is obviously able to take a higher road because he is black but I do not subscribe to the belief that you have to be black to have compassion for the black cause. Can a caucasian support the black cause and not be questioned for ulterior motives as long as that person is sincere and not one sided in their beliefs? I for one feel that I can be empathetic for another's cause and supportive of a group of people even though I may not always be perfectly politically correct about all of my statements in public. I think what Bill Clinton said about the "fairytale" aspect of Obama's cause or Hillary's reference to LBJ and MLK's relationship can all too easily be blown out of proprtion and distorted through the lens of the media. Both of the Clinton's have reached out to minority people in a way that I can feel proud of and in the spirit of civil rights for all of us. Thank you for your attention.
