Mumia: Political Prisoner or Cop Killer?

Last week, an appeals court ruled that former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal -- who has been on death row for 26 years -- should get a new penalty hearing. That means he could be let off death row, but not freed from jail.

I talked to Jeff Mackler, director of The Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal. (Unfortunately the lines were down at the studio we booked him in, so he was on cell phone, and the audio is a little choppy.)

He raises questions of whether too many potential black jurors were removed from the jury pool. Then I spoke with Maureen Faulkner, widow of the Philadelphia police officer Abu-Jamal was convicted of murdering. She says she believes that Abu-Jamal specifically wanted to kill a police officer, but that the case may not directly be about race.

Take a listen to what they had to say.

If you've been tracking this case: what do you think should happen? A new trial on the evidence? This new hearing on the penalty? Or should he remain on death row? ... and of course, we want to know why you believe what you do.

Please make due efforts to "balance" all such programs by having time on-air split between, say, a Pentagon spokesperson and a widow of a slain Iraqi civilian.
It's fine to have "both sides" and all, but to JUST do that says that you cannot or do not want to do your own research or fact-checking.
We might as well be hearing an argument in the subway for all the substance it provides.
Please follow up with input about what Jeff Macker said about the Mumia situation, and what Mrs Faulkner said. Both can't be right.
Also, it would be educational to many to hear from professional psychologist about why a widow would spend 26 years working to kill someone. One wonders if Mrs Faulkner is receiving "economic support" for her quarter century of needs. And from whom.
Yes, the drive to stay alive, and keep a friend/relative alive, will last as long as they live...but the vengeance-killer drive? I don't buy it, or get it.

Mumia Abu-Jamal should never have spent a single minute behind bars. He is manifestly innocent and should be freed immediately. For a carefully documented fact sheet summarizing the facts in his case, go to http://partisandefense.org. There you will also find: Mumia's own declaration, in which, contrary to Maureen Faulkner's statement, he asserts his innocence and outlines what happened the night police officer Faulkner was killed; as well as the affidavit of Arnold Beverly, who confessed to killing Faulkner. Mumia was framed up for his political beliefs. The racist death penalty, legacy of chattel slavery in the U.S., should be abolished!

I listened to the Podcast of the Mumia topic. I thought it was very balanced.

political prisoner... i am not saying he is innocent. cop beats on his brother, he has a gun. both suspect and cop are shot. do the math

however, he was not convicted because of the evidence. he was convicted because of his political beliefs.
