It's sad, but he has absolutely no choice in this and that must be recognized. The only thing that would be harder than running for the office of POTUS with black skin, would be running for president as a non-Christian. Obama is aware that the rumors circulating re: his faith are the most damaging thing the GOP has (at the moment, at least), and this is basic damage control.

Simply put: one photo op with some American Muslims gets him a few thousand American Muslim votes. It also immediately goes in a quarter-million attack ads and campaign flyers and gives the GOP a few tens of thousands of votes. It's just not worth it, in terms of electoral math - there are far more Christians to upset than Muslims to win over in this country. (I'm not saying I like this, but that's the way it is.)
