Inside the Art of Scoring Hollywood Films

What would the movie Jaws be without that deep bass refrain?

Memorable films are often propelled by an inspired musical score.

ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) runs a summer boot camp for hopeful composers. The annual film scoring workshop puts a dozen applicants -- from among hundreds -- on a soundstage with a live orchestra to make move magic.

For more, Michael Bearden shares his story with NPR's Tony Cox. Take a look.

Bearden is an alumnus of the ASCAP film composing workshop, who has scored major movies and served as musical director for stars like Whitney Houston and Madonna.

Tony Cox,
What a great intreview with Michael Bearden, a up & coming screen composer, who is African American. I have been a fan of film scores for many years & even have a small collection of my favorites soundtracks in my music collection.

It is very exciting to see Mr. Bearden, this young brother beginning to make his mark on the world of film with his music. I hope Mr. Bearden gets a chance to work on a regular basis to be able to diversify & sharpen his art as a film composer.

Their are so many gifted men & women of African descent in the music industry, but very few in the film industry. I wish Mr. Bearden ALL THE BEST, in his career as a film composer, & will be on the look out for his scores.

Thank you News & Notes ( Tony Cox) for bringing this fine gifted young man to our (Publics) attention. I knew he was different when I saw the Ankh hanging from his neck; You go my Brother !

A pure example of artistic genious. Berden personafies the width at which a complete musician should be. Lets just say his wing span is large allowing him to cover massive ground. Deeply moved by his insight and professionalism. Thanks NPR for sharing.
