Obama Picks Biden For Vice President

Barack Obama and Joe Biden

You were right. Barack Obama has picked Joe Biden to be on the Democratic ticket as vice president. The Associated Press has more:

Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

Biden, 65, has twice sought the White House, and is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.

Across more than 30 years in the Senate, he has served at various times not only as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee but also as head of the Judiciary Committee, with its jurisdiction over anti-crime legislation, Supreme Court nominees and Constitutional issues.

In selecting Biden, Obama passed over several other potential running mates, none more prominent than former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, his tenacious rival in dozens of primaries and caucuses.

What do you think of Obama's choice ... and of the timing?

The timing was awful. Did I really have to wait until 3am on a Saturday morning to learn about the Biden pick? Get it together people.

Obama and Biden have some big policy differences that McCain will exploit. Obama didn't want a yes man but I think he ended up with a no man.
Not WRIGHT for America has a hilarious spoof post about Obama debating Biden instead of McCain. www.notwrightforamerica.com. I think that sums up the problems with the Biden pick.

In my own opinion the Obama campaign was doomed before his VP selection process was completed. Biden does little to advantage the campaign and much to arm the opposition. The one ray of sunshine for those who believe the democrats to be 'effete wine sipping liberals' unwilling or unable to match the Rovian politics of this new century ( deplorable yes, effective, yes again) is that Joe will serve as Obama's attack dog.

Great pick! I made my case for Biden as Obama's running mate a week ago here:http://afroamericawriter.blogspot.com/2008/08/democratic-vp-my-case-for-biden.html#links

Joe Biden is a good choice because he does strengthen the Democratic ticket's foreign policy credentials. With respect to the Russian aspect of Obama's future foreign policy, there is an interesting suggestion from Steve Levine. The Russians have a big weakness. Obama and Biden should keep in mind Russia's Achilles Heel as they deal with Putin and Medvedev. Levine knows this area, having covered wars in Chechnya, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Tajikistan as well as the Soviet-Afghan war: http://oilandglory.com/2008/08/russias-achilles-heel.html

I really think the timing is terrible. I also feel the whole "lets text my FANS" first was an insult to Democratic voters. I am very happy that someone let the cat out of the bag. Biden is definitely someone I would not want to see in office. My decision, write in Hillary Clinton-if people think that it is throwing away my vote, I beg to differ. I feel as if I am exercising my right to express my dissatisfaction with Obama's choice and with the handling of the entire campaign and the short term memory of all that Hillary Clinton has done or attempted to have done for Healthcare, the Black Community, Unions and the impoverished of our country.
