Even if you love your job, love your house, your friends and your city, you've probably had a few fleeting moments where you fantasize about packing everything up and moving thousands of miles away. It would be a clean slate with endless possibilities.

I suspect most people's fantasy would take them somewhere warm, like the Canary Islands or Tuscany. For most of us, the occasional vacation has to suffice.

But there are people who do actually make that leap. I spoke to one of them this past week.

Jazz singer Hattie St. John moved to Berlin 12 years ago. Originally from New Zealand, St. John had her first Billboard hit in 1981 with her band "Hattie and the Havana Hotshots."

But after her children grew up and left the house in the late 90s, St. John decided to do some traveling around Europe. After a short stay in Amsterdam, she landed in Berlin.

The singer found Berlin's music scene incredibly welcoming. She got jobs right away, she made friends fast and the city just seemed like a good fit. So she stayed put.

Over a decade later, St. John has recorded several records, teaches English, and performs all over the city, in both German and English.
