Old newsreels companies liked to feature new inventions, sometimes novelties and sometimes ostensibly useful things.
This 1951 Universal Newsreel features an French electromagnetic egg cooker, which I love for its meeting of sleek modernity and complexity of utter pointlessness.
It is narrated by the great Ed Herlihy — the voice-over guy for Universal Newsreel for years — equally adept at jingoistic politics and bad accents.
Found in the Archives, a Picture Show miniseries running at the beginning of each month, features archival films and found images selected by researcher Rich Remsberg.
