Mark Lane's mug shot, Jackson, Miss., 1961. Mississippi Department of Archives and History

Today's post about Mark Lane, the activist who was Dick Gregory's running mate on the Freedom and Peace Party ticket in 1968, elicited a note from Eric Etheridge, author of a new photo book about the Mississippi Freedom Riders called Breach of Peace.

The book features portraits of about 80 Riders and the mug shots of all of the 320-plus Riders arrested in Jackson, Miss., in 1961. Eric sent in the shot of Lane, which is featured above. (Does anyone know how to contact Mark Lane? Eric has located about 115 of the Riders but not him. Let me know.)

Roll Call's Shira Toeplitz is reporting that former Rep. Chris Chocola (R-IN) may become the new head of the Club for Growth organization once Pat Toomey leaves later this month to take on Arlen Specter in the 2010 Republican senatorial primary in Pennsylvania. Chocola was a two-term congressman who was defeated for re-election in 2006.

It's looking more and more like Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is going to forgo another term and instead run for the Senate seat being vacated by fellow Republican Mel Martinez. When Rep. Connie Mack IV (R) announced he would not run for the Senate, one of the first people he contacted was Crist. Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson (R), who has twice been elected statewide, said this week he will run for Crist's job: "Should the governor go to the U.S. Senate, then I feel like I've got something to offer the state," he said.

Crist is not expected to announce his plans until the legislative session ends May 1.
