Attorney General Martha Coakley has won the Democratic primary for the Senate seat held for more than four decades by the late Edward Kennedy. She defeated three opponents: U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and national service program co-founder Alan Khazei.

With about 90 percent of the vote counted, Coakley has about 47 percent, to Capuano's 27 percent, Khazei at 14 percent and Pagliuca at 12 percent.

Coakley will face the Republican primary winner, state Sen. Scott Brown, in the Jan. 19 special election.

Massachusetts has never sent a woman to the Senate. No Republican has won a Senate seat here since Ed Brooke was re-elected in 1972.
