Smoking or Non-Smoking?

A political blog by NPR

While in Gary yesterday we stopped by the Zion Progressive Cathedral International, where a couple of parishioners were gathered around a billboard outside the church.

What about second-hand smoke?

David Gilkey

Inside a church pastor delivered a sermon to the youth. Sandra Younger, an associate pastor, stepped outside for a moment to chat with us about the church and leadership. She says a leader is someone who follows God -- a person who knows the word of God and asks for direction.

Sandra Younger

Sandra Younger doesn't think she'll pay a whole lot of attention to the convention but says it's important who's elected President as it pertains to whether or not that person will let God guide him.

David Gilkey

Younger also told us that even though there's a feeling of hopelessness that's pervaded this city, God hasn't taken his eyes off Gary.

can you fit in a visit to houston?? it really is a special place. i moved there from the UK 7 years ago and have discovered that what i initially thought was a dump is in fact a great city and a great place to live. and with the energy boom at the moment it is not the same as the rest of the USA. Worth a visit.

If you are passing through Albuquerque, New Mexico on your way to Arizona, stop by the Frontier reasturant for breakfast on Sunday if possible. You will find it on Central Ave. right across from the University of New Mexico. There You may well find local leaders or local celebraties rubbing shoulders with college students and regular people, all waiting in the same line for the best cinnamon rolls and huevos rancheros you will find in the southwest.

I caught the tail end of your show today. When you spoke of telling you about leaders, I thought immediately of our field organizer for the Barack Obama Campaignfor Change-Ms Tessa Bray. We are located in Ozaukee County, WI. We are having the Grand Opening of our office tomorrow evening (Tuesday, Aug 26). She is so dynamic. Due to her diligence, we have been given a 2500 ft. office to run the VERY FIRST DEMOCRATIC PARTY HEADQUARTERS IN OZAUKEE COUNTY. Our speakers will be Sheldon Wasserman and Wayne Larrivee (voice of the Packers-do try to make this event)! She has managed to garner a plane and she is just a wee bit of a woman in physical stature. Extremely dynamic, I imagine her dancing at the inauguration of Obama! Please take a look! She's quite the leader!

Stop by Fort Leavenworth, KS.

Fort Leavenworth hosts the ten month long Commanding General Staff College (CGSC) school which most Majors in the US Army attend. There are currently 1300 Majors in the school with two classes every year. You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a CGSC student. Here are your future Army leaders.

I would like to nominate Jenny Hoch who is a girl scout leader for over 15 years. She recently took a girl scout troop of inner city Dallas teenagers to Mexico for 3 weeks. While there she fell and broke her wrist, only put a splint on it, ended up having surgery in Mexico and continued to chaperone the girls. Never took pain meds, to me that is unbelievable. I think the girls probably learned a lot from Jenny on this trip. My daughter actually accompanied Jenny on a wider opportunity trip to England and felt that Jenny was the best leader and really enjoyed having her on her trip!

If you are headed from Alton, Il to St. Louis, I suggest you talk with my son-in-law, Keith Freber. Keith is a small business owner who is very politically aware. I know you would enjoy talking with him - happy to share his contact info. Just let me know.

hope you can stop at some of the Indian Reservations you'll pass on your way to Phoenix--Laguna, Acoma, Navajo, Zuni, Hopi--to name a few. There are many leaders there that the rest of us need to listen to.

I live in Jerseyville, north of Alton, IL. If you want to meet leaders I have an idea. When you get to St. Louis, check out the Black Bear Bakery at 2639 Cherokee Street. There's a story there. It's an anarchist business. For a preview see their web site.

Since you've just been in IN, this may be a stretch: but you need to talk to John Strange, an 80 1/2 year old sales consultant for my young company in Batesville, IN, who still works and travels hundreds of miles, 3 days a week, and sets an ethical, business, and sartorial standard that the rest of us can only hope to emulate. (And he's darn cute, too!) Really...you want a leader? Without an agenda? Without guile? And who happens to be an excellent amateur water-colorist? John will show you what a real leader (the quiet kind) is made of.
