Palin Given Extra Time

Our colleagues at the Anchorage Daily News (via the AP) are reporting that Governor Sarah Palin has been given an extension for submitting her personal financial records. She will now release them on October 3 -- the day after the VP debate. The general counsel for the McCain campaign said, given the fact that Palin has never run for federal office, she needs extra time to pull together the relevant documents.

As the article points out, federal law requires that presidential, vice presidential and congressional candidates file ethics reports detailing their assets and liabilities, including income, investment real estate, stocks, and debt.

The ADN notes that last year, Palin earned $125,000 as governor. Her husband took in $46,790 as a part-time oil production operator, $46,265 from commercial salmon fishing, and $10,500 in Iron Dog snow machine race winnings.

Shouldn't all this information be accumulated as part of finalizing the vetting process?

Will she get an extension for one of those 3:00 am phone calls? Why the day after the debate?

"and $10,500 in Iron Dog snow machine race winnings."

That might be one of the greatest phrases in the history of vice-presidential news.

Didn't she have to submit her finances when she ran for governor? Why doesn't she at least have that information?

This is a 100% complete and total joke.

You're the governer of the state of Alaska (all 700,000 of you) - you're an exective with MORE experience than Obama & Biden combined (and therefore McCain himself) and YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR A COPY OF YOUR FINANCES?

Are you joking or just lying to us?

I'm NOT a governor and I can turn over ANY of my financial information in less than 10 minutes.

YOU ARE NOT TELLING THE TRUTH - YOU ARE DELAYING and why this is acceptable only shows how weak McCains' vetting process was but how pathetic this entire election process is.

Kevin,

The best part is that no one even cares about your finances. Wow, you can turbo tax yourself and turn over the print-out. I am completely impressed. I'm sure that it is not possible that anyone's situation could be more complicated.

I am sure that this, and only this, is the reason you have distaste for Governor Palin.

This election process, sir, is the foundation of our nation and our freedom. It is not pathetic. If you had any context of the lack of freedom in this world or the number of men who have died to defend it, then you might not make such a comment.

Comments like these are saddening, because somewhere along the line your education broke down. Some how you arrived at the idea of a people's freedom is pathetic. Sad, sir, sad.

Since I did not directly put-down Mr. James (whose comment followed mine) I would like the opportunity to reply respectfully -

I have served in our armed forces and fought for that freedom and my freedom to speak here - so I appreciate the lecture and I have voted every election of life since 18 - but I appreciate the advice.

My finances, as a Joe Blow, are in order - why wouldn't the governors be?

The fact that Palin's stalling on her taxes in fact is but ONE of a long and daily growing list of reasons dislike McCain's choice of a highly, highly unqualified VP including:

1) Her attack on "community organizers" as if they are the dirt of our nation

2) Her bold-faced lie about the Bridge to Nowhere

3) Leaving Wasilla in the black with $20 Million in debt

4) Her inability to recognize or understand the Bush Doctrine.

5) Her cutting of funding for single / unwed mothers when she and her daughter were both pregnant before marriage.

6) Her inability to even name one "Maverick" policy or action McCain has taken (Couric interview, yesterday)

7) Her lack of economic, foreign policy, or military experience

8) Her hypocricy in standing on stage with her pregnant, unmarried daughter when Obama could not POSSIBY have done this.

9) Her inability to name even one "trade mission" carried on with Russia from Alaska under her governorship.

10) Her near total media silence - being 'handled' and scripted in nearly every possible way.

Palin is a smart woman, I grant. Maverick...that has yet to be show. Thinking on her feet - well, I expect she might be able to but is being prevented from it.

Yes -the election process is largely a joke - there's not even a federal election agency to oversee the mess that is going on state to state, so yes - I stick to my comments and I respect yours...after all - I fought for your ability to say them. Did you?

As a matter of fact I am an honorably discharged member of the Air Force. I commend you for your service, but this election is not a joke. It's sad that you think so.

You once again support my statement. You and I are average "joe-blows" as you call it. Our finances are simple. And even still, many people file for extensions for many varied reasons. My contention is that this has provided an excuse to dump on this woman again.

Lets debate on issues on not stuff like this. If she is proven to be a tax-fraud then that will be something to be wary of. But simply not releasing them as fast as someone might like seems like excuse making.

Your list is interesting. Made up of some truth and mostly spin. I'll grant you she is not the most experienced. But aren't many people excited about Obama for the same reasons, sir? Isn't the fact that he's fresh and exciting the reason so many people are excited about him? It can't be his stances, since most of them are consistent with Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry and therefore not new. So I can only conclude that he takes these ideas to a new level on personality. Which is fine. But don't slam Palin for lack of experience when the other party has nominated an equally inexperienced candidate.

Lastly, I once again commend you as a fellow veteran of the Armed Services. I hope you do not think I was personally attacking you. Whether or not you're a veteran has very little to do with the respect your owed as a citizen. All people deserve respect, and so I hope we can carry on an appropriate discourse.
