Saturday Night Live opened up the show with punch lines at the McCain camp's expense. It's the second time in as many weeks. Last week it was Tina Fey playing Gov. Sarah Palin. This week targets the top of the ticket. McCain's repeated use of "My friends" and the perception that he is a technophobe play starring roles.
Michael Olson gets it wrong. This parody wasn't making fun of McCain's use of the phrase "My friends" or his lack of knowledge concerning technology as much as it was a direct challenge to the dishonest campaign he is running. Someone in the mainstream media needs to stand up for the truth. NPR doesn't seem to have the courage to. Too bad John Stewart and SNL have more integrity than the obvious republican supporters Robert Seigel or Mara Liasson.
S*** folks, finally saw something to laugh about...me and the dog pissed our pants over that one!!
Who says a prozac nation is incapable of appreciating a good chuckle now and again...
Wow, that's like the "old" Saturday night live, when they used to go after the man/establishment. In the last decade or so they've tried not to offend anybody and have turned into wusses.
The personal attacks on Gov. Sarah Palin's family members would never be allowed on Sen. Obama's daughters by Saturday Night Live. Why such a double standard? This again shows where the mainstream media stands with regards to the race.
Henry, are you suggesting that the media shows deference to black people while being unfairly critical of white people?
You're wrong.
So the personal attacks wouldn't be allowed if it were Obama, huh?
I guess they never once took aim at Clinton's misconduct either, at least not in your world. Just like the newspapers never put a story on the front page about that subject.
SNL hasn't parodied Obama's daughters because there isn't anything funny there. End of story. The papers print whatever will sell papers.
If you actually watched SNL, you would be aware that they have already poked fun at Obama's persona and at the infatuation, which they portray as a "crush", that some media people seem to have on him.
The fact is that if Obama had chosen a woman (or a man) with a pregnant 16 year old daughter, the right would be up in arms and wailing about "the kind of example those Democrats are setting for our children." They would hold that person up as the very definition of what is wrong with "liberal policies and politics."
Actually this piece seems pretty accurate and very funny. Finally SNL has a good skit reminiscing of the old days in their glory. Yea NPR for airing it on their website.
It's about time someone says something! The whole McCain campaign is a joke! This is a comment regarding the sketch SNL did a week back with Tina Fey,the only reason Sarah Palin was chosen was because she was a woman, not for her "experience" because she has very little - certainly not enough to warrant a presidential candidacy. Sexism certainly has shown itself in the McCain campaign. As a woman I am offended by his campaign. It seems to me according to his campaign, I should vote for McCain because his running mate is a woman without considering what she stands for or if she actually knows enough to be in such a high office. SNL is only doing what so many others shy away from because they fear backlash for not being "politically correct". Well, I believe it's time to be realistic about what we need in this country and start speaking out.
name me exactly one instance where the "mainstream" media said one unkind work about Governor Palin's children, pregnancies, or unplanned pregnancies of herself or any of her children. Just one. Mum on Chelsea (unlike McCain) Mum on Bush Twins (despite getting caught underaged drinking.) Don't mistake bloggers and uncouth radio folk for the real media. Just one quote, come on, find one.
For the first time since, well, ever, I sense a slight glimmer of hope. I'm noticing more and more folks recognizing the cynicism and calling it out for what it is. And not just from the Bill Maher's, John Stewart's, and Al Franken's of the world, but the Karl Rove's, Scott McClellens's, Lou Dobbs's, even the Bill O'Reilly's. More and more people are starting to say, enough of the lies and and spin; this is going too far.
I wrote mroe about this idea here:
McCain: Victory with Honor (or Not... Whatever Works)

Why no mention of the skit suggesting incest between Todd Palin and his daughter Bristol...what a firestorm that ignited. I just goes to show you that anything is fair game when you are lampooning the Republicans. Imagine if SNL did something as tasteless to the Obama's. Nevermind, NBC and SNL would never do that to the "Chosen One".
There needs to be a public apology by the SNL staff and Loren Michaels.
Political parody will be a factor in my decision making this November. I'm having a very hard time imagining how SNL will joke about Obama. On the other hand my head is spinning off into outerspace thinking of the fun I will have watching the caricatures of the other ticket. The power of laughter and a good time, don't underestimate it.
Its simple, people - one of McCain's spokesmen nearly two weeks ago said and I quote "This election is not about issues - its about character".
Thus - character IS an issue, right? Right.
Now - since the election is about Character, as clearly stated by the McCain Campaign - then why are we not supposed to consider both Palin & McCains character in the next eight weeks - not only Palin's 'reg-lar ol' just like ya'll moose-hunting and hockey-momming, but every single facet of her character. Or did I mis-understand the Spokesmans' desire?
You asked for us to consider your character McCain. And since character is formed not only by politics, but your life in general - what is there about your personal life, your family, your husband, who you are, what you do, how you act - what is there that you can't share McCain & Palin? For example - certainly if Obama got onstage with Biden's & Obama's family and one of Obama's daughters was pregnant & unmarried - all the conservatives would've cheered that on, RIGHT?
You should be happy to have it explored in only eight measley weeks vs. all the other candidates 18 (or less ) months. Its becoming crystal clear that both McCain's & Palins characters are HIGHLY questionable - and thus, their issues are petty & cloudy.
This is hysterical. Bravo, SNL.
