Political Junkie

Our favorite political junkie was lost without us last week, so he's back today for his usual roundup of political comings and goings. Today, John McCain makes his case for the war in Iraq, and hopes to turn that support into votes come '08... The White House and Democrats face off over timetables and Iraq spending... And Democrats debate the presidential debate that's sponsored, in part, by Fox News. We'll also talk with Republican strategist Roger Stone, about his column, Let McCain be McCain. And with Ken Rudin, I'm sure there will be a few surprises, too.

Yesterday the Democratic candidates debated in a nationwide "town hall" discussion set up by MoveOn. Are you ignoring this event?

If Hillary Clinton winds up winning her campaign for President, the United States will have gone 20 straight years (and counting) with the Presidency shared by just two families (Bush and Clinton, of course). How is this possibility viewed internationally?

Why did I just hear Ken Rudin refer to the "Democrat" party? Please do not collaborate with the Republicans efforts to rename us. We are the Democratic Party.

Just now, Ken Rudin was asked a simple question: "Do tax cuts always increase tax revenues?" Ken refused to answer. Let me answer for him: the answer is NO. In fact, tax cuts almost always decrease tax revenues, for obvious reasons.

Why do "journalists" like to pretend that there are no objective facts, just "he said, she said." As Paul Krugman has written, if Bush said the earth was flat, the headline the next day would be "Shape of Earth: Views Differ."

Is Ken worried that reporting the truth will make him sound too liberal? Somewhere, Edward R. Murrow is spinning in his grave.

I am a Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq from the outset. But I am deeply troubled by both House and Senate deadlines. I wonder if my tolerance of those deadlines is a function of my rejection of the absolutist proclamations of "The Decider." I wish Congress would show more of the nuance of current presidential candidates, demonstrated by the recognition of serveral candidates that there would still be something in the range of 100,000 troops in Iraq after the "withdrawal."

When have tax cuts NOT increased revenue and stimulated the economy? How can increasing taxes help the economy?

There is one Democrat with a backbone; but democrats alone don't own him. The man I'm referring to is the most wise and logical man I've ever seen, and sadly this nation doesn't own him, as he is truly a citizen of the world. This country doesn't deserve President Al Gore, though we desperately need him. The world does on the other hand deserve him, and while himself contributes about as much pollution a year as a few American families; consider how much pollution his work is preventing?

Mr President Al Gore, your country needs you!
