It's no longer any secret around here that when it comes to sugar and chocolate, I have a bit of a problem with self-control. So, nobody's surprised that when we all asked each other in the office what food we'd gorge on if health didn't matter, I couldn't pick just one. I need to categorize that kind of thing... Greasy foods: pizza. Sweets: chocolate chip cookies and ice cream. Salty: chex mix. Other: anything fried. I'm sure there's more, but I'm far too hungry now to keep writing. If you weren't paying any attention to fat or fiber or calories, what foods would you eat?
pizza and ice cream!!
Wisconsin Squeaky Cheese Curds!
Deep Fried Dill Pickles. There's a little place near Cedar Falls Iowa, Z's Seven Seas, that serves them. If they exist other places, I haven't found them, and attempts to recreate the delicacy at home are unsuccessful. Perhaps it's the climate, I now live in the west.
Sue in Wyoming
I heard the comment about Squeaky Wisconsin Cheese Curds and had to add a clarification. I grew up in WI and currently live in CA. Squeaky cheese curds are a mystery to most non-Wisconsin natives.
When cheese curds are fresh (meaning made just made) they have been kept at room temperature and haven't been refrigerated much yet. This is usually the conditions if you by fresh cheese curds from a cheese factory. During this special time, when you eat the cheese curd, it squeaks as you chew it.
As to why it happens, I'm not sure. But it generally indicated that you have fresh cheese curds. And usually requires buying the cheese curds at a cheese factory. The squeak goes away after about 3-4 days.
Cheese curds are fresh cheese before it is pressed into blocks. Since the curds are so fresh, they squeak when chewed.
It was in the mid-nineties, but I still wake up at night thinking about the Po'Boy sandwiches I had in New Orleans. Fresh white bread, some shrimp, ... man this is good!
After moving to Austria in 2000, I went
all over Vienna looking for Pastrami, but finally resigned myself to the sad fact that you simply can't get a decent pastrami sandwich outside New York.
But they have good beer here.
These are then things I would eat.
Happy fourth!
Iowa sweet corn is here and I'm one very happy camper. We'll be serving it at our 4th of July celebration tonight with slow-grilled ribs. Yummmm!
My quest is for the perfect preparation for soft-shelled crabs - sauted, grilled, fried in a light batter ... the search goes on! Had beef on weck when a child visiting family in western New York and would love to taste it again.
A Memphis native, I am proud to say our best fried chicken restaurant has also been named the best in the world by several publications (including Vogue, per the forever grouchy Jeffery Steingarten). If I could eat at Gus's every day of my life and not gain an ounce, you best believe I'd do it. The crust is a deep mahogany, loaded with spice, and it's a super crunchy! Lean, juicy, barely greasy, piping hot. . . mmmmmmmm
In-N-Out has a "secret" online menu that has more things then the one posted in the stores. Animal style is from that menu and can be done to anything. Basically you add grilled diced onions, cheese, and thousand island dressing.
