Slumber party in the Senate? Sounds like a blast... though only 60 senators actually made a 5 a.m. procedural vote (with some sporting the bedhead look). There was pizza, and cots, and plenty of talking, but nothing was really resolved on the key issues of Iraq and proposed timelines for withdrawal. In the actual vote on the Reed-Levin amendment (more specifically, whether there were enough votes to cut off debate and bring the amendment to a vote), democrats fell 8 votes short. There will be plenty of finger pointing until the next all-nighter. In other political news, Sen. David Vitter, R-LA, keeps spinning his sex scandal, "Obama girl" takes on "Giuliani girl" on YouTube, and John McCain's campaign troubles continue while the latest GOP poll shows "none of the above" as the winner.
In the absence of any real action, the kind Nancy Pelosi insincerely promised, a night of debate, with pizza and cots (that were duely photographed going in to the Capitol) is what the nation was yearning for in the last election. Great job Senate. Keep it up. Next time make some ice cream Sundae's for the cameras.
The Democrats cannot end this war unless they cut off the money, which is just what the Republicans want them to do so they can blame them for the inevitable "defeat" instead of placing the responsbility for this disaster where it really belongs...on the doorstep of GWB and all those who supported this undertaking.
That Rebecca Roberts and Scott Cameron of TOTN can describe the War in Iraq Opposition*s efforts to bring the Levin/Reed proposal to the Senate floor for a for or against vote as a "snore" is an indication of the present diminished status of NPR as an news organization. How are these two individuals considered to be employable at NPR? "Snore"! Access Josh Marshall*s blog Talkingpoints and watch Sen.s Lieberman,Thune,Menendez,Feinstein, and Webb."Snore"! Access was available to Crooks and Liars blog where Sen Landrieu*s speech was viewable."Snore"! Firedoglake*s blog had a speech by Senator Harkin.DailyKos lists 565 soldiers killed since the "surge"began; why two arrogant individuals consider themselves competent to assess a complicated effort to either procedurally bring a proposal to the Senate floor or deny a vote is an indication of the present inanition at NPR
Or it could just be the news....(while reading the last post) *SNORE

David:
The "snore" line was mine... in the first line of our introduction to the political junkie segment yesterday I wrote, "Last night's slumber party in the Senate turned out to be a snore..." Not an indictment of anything, or anyone. It was, simply, a play on words... there were cots brought into the senate, senators left the floor and, presumably, slept. Very little actual debate transpired. Thus "snore." To read a better description of the all-nighter, check out Dana Milbank's coverage in the Post today.
