President Bush often cites the importance of defeating al Qaida in Iraq as central to the war on terror. There are lots of questions about the organization... who are they, what are their motives? We have two well-known terrorism experts with us to answer your questions. Peter Bergen and Daniel Byman join us.
No one has suggested that Al Qaeda had a significant presence in Irag prior to the invasion. Whatever presence they have established was made possible by our handling of the war and the administration of Iraq. Creation of new geography hospitable to Al Qaeda is, therefore, an outcome of our policies.
It seems that Iraq-based al Qaeda and "Afghanistan-based" (?) al Qaeda share ideological views. I'm curious if your guests know how much money, weapons, information, and other necessities of conflict are shared between the two groups.
Thank you.
As defined by the United Nations, is there a genocide taking place in Iraq? If so, is it primarily between the Shia and the Suni or is it Al Queda on Shia?
There was no al-Qaeda in Iraq before we entered. We have caused it to spring up. (Any Trekkies out there will see the parallel to the Prime Directive)
The terrorists have already accomplished their goal of taking away our freedoms. When they attacked us, they caused our government to increase security in our airports, and got the president to begin his unconstitutional prohram of warrantless wiretapping.
