August 28th Show

Hi Everyone! This is Gwen, and I direct Talk of the Nation. I'm also the all-seeing third eye on the show that looks into the future and knows what topics are coming up on the program each day. Okay, I confess... I only know because I peek at what the show producers have written down on the show board. Nonetheless, it is important that you know what we're working on for you, and I will do my best to give you a daily sneak preview!! So I'll get right to it!!

Our first hour today begins with a conversation about the Michael Vick case and why some are claiming that race plays a role in how the case is being covered and how he is being punished. Later in that hour, we'll go to New Orleans and check up on how the health care system is faring almost two years after Hurricane Katrina.

In our second hour, we'll make a list of "Things to Do Before You Die." What's on your life list? Following that, we'll talk about concerns surrounding safety on college campuses. And we'll read from emails and blog posts from listeners who have sent in their comments about some of the topics we covered last week.

We hope you enjoy the show!

I am a pit bull owner and advocate, so I have a certain interest in the dogs. Michael Vick did not apologize to the dogs.
I think maybe he could do community service at an animal shelter putting dogs down since he enjoys that sort of thing. People who fight dogs are out of balance.

As a Member of Law Enforcement, It is well known that No One finds forgiveness for anyone that harms a child or and animal. Why? because both are considered innocent.

...the Flickr pic is a GREAT idea. Can you do this every day? Great use of tech (digital cam/internet) to bring us all into the process. Many are just as interested in that as in the great editorial content of the show.

I just heard the two guests discussing the Michael Vick case stating that one report compared him to fascists & committing genocide and another radio show compared him to someone committing sexual abuse on their daughter. While both of these are highly offensive, it is offensive to me as a white woman that the two guests on the show have repeatedly stated that these reports are offensive to black people or the black community. They are offensive. Period. Don't make it worse by being racist against whites by suggesting that we might approve of such mud slinging. What Michael Vick did is disgusting, disturbing and the comments made that over-exagerate his crime are offensive to people of all races, not just blacks.

Vick's actions were wrong and he now appears to be accepting his punishment.

I live in the area around Vick's hometown and I feel he has been more of a positive influence on youth in the community than most of the other professional athletes from this area. Unfortunately his recent actions have negatively impacted how most look at him. Going forward the best thing he can do to repay his debt personally is to spend time teaching the youth of the community that he made a mistake that could have easily been avoided. A lot of professional athletes come from under privileged communities while that is no excuse for criminal actions Vick should use the lesson he has been forced to learn to advise future athletes in becoming better role models

And come on Stephen, apologize to the dogs? Vick appeared to be very contrite during his speech.

I don't care who the animal abuser is, and especially what color, ethnicity, nation of origin, gender, religion, etc. I am offended by dogfighting. It is the cruel and sadistic torture of animals for the enjoyment of very disturbed people. Michael Vick needs his head examined, and he needs to be removed from society so he does not hurt humans. I would say this about a person of any race or background if they enjoyed dogfighting, and had a long history of it, as Vick apparently has.

Michael Vick has enough status and money that race is hardly going to play an issue in the judge's decision, which I hope is the maximum penalty, plus what he really deserves. (In this case, I am for some Old Testament rules. . ."an eye for an eye".)

Michael Vick needs to feel the terror that he inflicted upon those animals, who never asked to encounter this freak of a human. What a SAD statement it is that Vick has been one of the best influences upon the youth in any community!

I challenge anyone who defends a lenient sentence for Mr. Vick to please provide quotes that indicate he is at all sorry for, or even comprehends, the crimes he committed. It's all about Michael being sorry and now moving on with his life so he can get his financial kingdom and rise to athletic fame back on track. He is sorry and can't wait to do his time, so he can get the punishment over with. Give ME a break, will you, Paul? Yes, apologizing to innocent animals whose lives were not only taken in vain, but whose last (and probably only) experiences in this world), were spent in excruciating mental, as well as physical, pain is the LEAST Michael Vick can do. I hope the Judge sees through his lies and realizes that he is not ready for forgiveness from Jesus or anyone else. How can a man who is too ignorant to comprehend his crimes be sorry?

Finally, I am white. I would not edit a single letter from the above comments for any other player, regardless of race or any other personal characteristic.

I see why posting that photo of the white board is cool conceptually, but how does it actually help me? It's fairly illegible and even if it weren't - why do I need to know what you're going to cover before you cover it? It would be one thing if you were looking for my input to help influence your show (like, let me add to the white board), but you aren't.

Hi Elizabeth, If you click on the small photo of the white board, a larger picture will appear, which should help with legibility. Also, some of our readers have requested more information about what's coming up on the day's show so they can plan their listening around it.
