The Ice Storm

The biggest issue I have with ice storms is to ... SLOW DOWN! Enjoy the time from work, school,.....

Seems like every two years we get a major ice storm (.25"+) here in Wichita.
So, I trim the trees away from the powerlines every fall. Always have a full tank of propane (for the grill),
some ham (or beef) in the 'frige, and a package of beans (or rice).Cornbread mix is optional. That brings to mind Sarah Handel's post on bourbon. Have some around!

Last week, before the storm hit Oklahoma City, my family went to Dallas,TX. I knew the weather would possibly get bad on the way back so I play Murphy's law backward. Disaster doesn't strike (as badly) those who are ready for it! So,I prepared! I put food, water, ropes, extra shoes/socks in the car before we left. And never let the car get below half a tank of gas.
Yes, we hit icy roads in OKC on the way back. Slowing down to 40MPH, I noticed how light traffic was for 7:00pm on a sunday! Thankfully, not much wind! Yeah, it took two hours to get thru OKC, but we did it. Only saw 5 wrecks! What's the big deal?

Like I told a co-worker last week(before the last storm), "I can always make my way home. I might NOT make it to work, but I WILL get home!"

Finding a place to eat is certainly a challenge. We've found a new fine dining restaurant about 40 minutes east of Tulsa near Wagoner. It's called The Canebrake and the food is fantastic and it's still slightly "undiscovered," so we were able to get reservations easily.

Thank you for your coverage of the ice storm. For many of us in eastern Oklahoma it is the second in eleven months. So much for the "100 year event" idea. We'll survive; we're coping, sometimes well, sometimes not. Neighbors are helping each other. Some are bringing more than just a smile to others, like the fellow today in a Homeland parking lot in Pryor, OK. He was wearing a jack-o-lantern tshirt and was "directing traffic". Gave us all quite a much-needed chuckle.

Hey guess what! We're getting MORE snow (as of Friday early pm). The people in Hutchinson, KS (up the road from me) will be thrilled. Better stock-up on bourbon, this could be a l-o-n-g winter.
