I HEART MARCUS MILLER!!!

Okay, I probably should admit right off the bat that I'm a bit biased when it comes to bass players. Let's just say that my ears are always tuned to a low E. I am extremely reluctant to even say this on a blog about Marcus Miller, but I play the bass guitar. Really, I think I was moved by Marcus Miller's playing long before I ever touched an E string. The bass is often the first thing I hear in any given song. I just didn't know at the time that almost every song I fell in love with had listed somewhere in the album credits, bass: Marcus Miller.

I remember when I practically popped my Grover Washington Jr. Winelight cassette from playing it so much. And as much as I loved Grover's sax crooning, it was the bass lines that wore me out. I finally picked up the cover to find out who in the world was playing like that! Some guy name Marcus Miller. Cool. So the next project I discovered and fell in love with was Joe Sample's Ashes to Ashes. Another near ruined cassette. That song "The Road Less Traveled"? I had to find out who THAT bass player was. Marcus Miller. Wait a minute! Then I discovered HE'S the blue light in the basement bass player on all those Luther Vandross ballads!! I truly believed I was the only one in the world who knew about this guy. I decided to let my musician friends in on my "as-yet-unknown" discovery. "You know who ya'll need to check out?!!!! This cat named Marcus Miller!!" The response? "Oh yeah. He's the man. He played with Miles." I've hearted Marcus ever since.

Today, he's going to play for you for our full second hour. Call in and talk to him. I'm happy to report that even though he's a musical giant, he's the most down to earth guy you'll ever want to meet.

This Miles piece he's playing - 2nd tune on the show -sounds alot like Chuck Mangione lifted it for "Give It All You Got" on the Fun and Games album in 1980.

Could Marcus comment on the influence of James Jamerson on his playing and how far Jamerson's influence continues to reach.

I am still mad at Marcus for not playing "What is Hip" when he came to Yoshi's Oakland. But I still think he's great and I got the Free - Import CD!

What kinds of strings does he use on his fretless basses?

Thanks!

This is in response to a guy who asked Marcus Miller whether or not he listens to metal, and if he recognizes the connection between jazz and metal. Marcus replied that he knows nothing about metal, and it's connection to jazz, but he seemed willing to explore new territory.

That said, I recommend Marcus pick up some early Megadeth (a metal band from the 80s, and who are still around now). I say Megadeth because 2 of the original members (Chris Poland - lead guitarist and the late Gar Samuelson - drums) were jazz musicians before leaving for the metal scene.

Listen to "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying" and you'll hear a lot of jazz influences, especially on drums. Also, listen to "Rust In Peace" and you'll here some over the top arrangements. The intricacy with each the members play is tight, like any great jazz band.

The jazz influence is there but often gets covered up by the distortion overdrive pedals and the decibel range. If there was ever a heavy metal band that came close to jazz, it is Megadeth, and those 2 albums exemplify that.

For easier connections check out most progressive rock/metal bands - YES, Queen, Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc. Lots of good stuff out there.

Happy listening!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview with Marcus Miller. I didn't catch it live but was glad that you had the it available through the website. He made me reminisce about the good times back at Music & Art High School and the talent that he showed back then (Class of ???77). Continue to teach and produce great music. Sorry I missed your performance in Buffalo, NY on 4/12/08. I can only imagine that I missed a great concert. We'll get you to one of our class reunions one year! Best wishes, Barney.
