McMafia

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, worldwide financial markets grew dramatically. Globalization made the world seem smaller. All of a sudden, there were new opportunities for trade, for investment.

In a new book, McMafia: A Journey Through The Global Criminal Underworld, Misha Glenny explores an unforeseen effect of globalization. The end of communism opened doors for enterprising criminals. Crime families became crime corporations. Globalization paved the way for what Glenny calls, a "New Silk Route." A way for criminals to transport drugs, money, weapons, and people to Europe and the United States.

If you have a question about the international black market, leave it here.

It gives me pause to hear what young women are will ing to do to get ahead. Here in the Sacramento area we have a large group of eastern Europe immigrants that were sponsored by a large fundamentalist church. It's common knowledge in the teaching community that when the young women & girls are absent from school they are often at the local "stroll" plying their wares to other immigrant men. My point is many of their illegal activities follow them here.

Are FAKE CHINESE brand name products sold and imported into the US part of your Global Criminal Underworld discussion in your book?

Thank you for writing this book an being on the radio for dialogue.

The most striking fact about what you are covering is how as a society we create these illicit industries by making drugs and prostitution illegal. Why can society be so stupid as not to realize that if we legalize these we can 1. collect taxes
2. damage the strength of the mafia and others
3. not make criminals from these activities
4. minimize our prison costs
5. + others

could you please comment on these.

Given that in the 17th, 18th and early 19th century it was the British who "globalized" the African slave trade and in the early 19th century developed the model for the Opium trade (under the auspices of the British East India Company and later the Parliament).

Where is Britain's responsibility or willingness to take responsibility for both of these?

NATO has been defeated in Afghanistan not by Drugs money but by the support of the Afghans people.
NATO been bombing Afghans and killing the Afghans people, but history will repeat it self once again and again. This war on Afghan people can not be win by killing the Afghan people. Since NATO can not fight the brave Afghan now it easy to blame drugs,
I think American should be ashamed of their defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I am a Native American and am disgusted with the way Misha Genny is it?...made the comment about "There are too many Chiefs and not enough Indians" I waited for him to apologize on air about the quote, and he never gave it a second thought. Neither did host Neal Conan. I enjoy the show, and was enjoying the guest until the comment. I believe a sincere apology is in order to all Native Americans around the country.

Is the guest familiar with Carolyn Nordstrom's book Shadows of War, and if so I'd like to know his thoughts on her work?

I thinked the guest jumped to conclusion on comment to Roger from Montana who mentioned helping supposed Russians carrying lots of cash. Russia went through an economy melt down several years ago and lost confidence in banking (look what's in store for us America). And as an American living in Russia today I see everyone carrying and paying big bills in cash. It was wrong to make the assumption that these tourists were mafia.

This is a many headed snake bit I agree the international banking system which props up all the parts needs to be overhauled and really reformed.
