There's a fantastic article by Ken Carbone at the Fast Company site: "Penalty! Unnecessary Blandness! Redesigning the Worst NFL Helmet Graphics." Carbone breaks down helmets based on how successful their designs are. The Rams and the Vikings score well for natural, intuitive, balanced designs, and the Bengals win top honors for their tiger stripes. But what about Tom Brady's silver-clad crew?

At the very the bottom of the list are the New England Patriots. The Patriots' helmet is plastered with their logo, which comes dangerously close to looking like a wind-swept John Kerry dressed up like a Minute Man.

Touche! Rather than just complaining about the Patriots' and other losers' ugly helmets, Carbone took them to "illustrator and retouching whiz Mike Racz," who implemented Carbone's redesign ideas. To my eye, each re-imagined helmet — for the Redskins, the Patriots, and the Buccaneers — is far more successful than its current incarnation. Check them out... And if you agree, maybe start lobbying the teams' front offices for new looks.
