I'm a recent Michael Pollan convert (no, it's not because he's bald, though I think it speaks well of him), and so I don't really hold with the great search for nutrients, as much as the search for healthy food. But on the New York Times Well blog, the most emailed post is a list of the healthiest foods you're not eating. Here's the one that caught my eye.
Sardines: Dr. Bowden calls them "health food in a can." They are high in omega-3's, contain virtually no mercury and are loaded with calcium. They also contain iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper and manganese as well as a full complement of B vitamins. How to eat: Choose sardines packed in olive or sardine oil. Eat plain, mixed with salad, on toast, or mashed with dijon mustard and onions as a spread.
Well, I've always loved the little suckers, in fact, I love pretty much all fish in a tin. But today, my long suffering cubicle-mate finally 'fessed up that my toast, sardine, and tomato sauce lunch was making her ill. Suggestions for making the delicious swimmers less stinky? Post, please.
