It's Hot.  Read This.

Okay, well, it's not as hot as it was, but if you are still a wilting little flower, what better way to revive then a cuddle with a couple of fantastic books?  When I read The Hunger Games and its sequel Catching Fire,  I found myself so absorbed that I literally did not want to eat.  I believe I even spent a Saturday night reading.  (I mean, I'm an old married lady, but still.)  Above you'll find the book trailer for the first book, but what I'm really excited about is the trailer for the third book, Mockingjay (with spoilers for the second two books, btw), which comes out August 24th.

What's so great about these books?  Look, I understand the appeal of Twilight — and I slogged through all of those books.  But slog is just it — The Hunger Games are so precisely plotted, so perfectly calibrated, that you can do nothing but burn through them.  Sure, there's a conversation to be had about the appeal of dystopias to teens (read Laura Miller's excellent piece), but let me also sing the praises of that most wonderful quality of all writing: suspense. These books are pure urgency.  So, next time the thermometer inches up over one hundred — pick up one of Suzanne Collins' mini-masterpieces, and be glad you're not fighting to the death in a post-apocalyptic arena!  And don't get a paper cut.
