If Dogwoods Made Music...

...what instruments would they be, what songs would they sing?

It's a question that floats along city streets and woodlands this time every year, and an answer that changes with the light and time of day. Sometimes I hear a solo oboe, at other times a Baroque instrumental fugue.

I know this much, it's as loud and sublime as it gets during this busting-out-all-over week I'm spending in D.C. Which reminds me of a few musical moments I collected a few years back; perhaps you'll give them a listen and let me know if they sing for you.

Dogwoods bark, of course. "Woof, woof"

First, they would take on Rene Marie's rendition of "How Can I Keep From Singing".... a capella jazz, and begins, "My life goes on in endless song, above earth's lamentations..." Then they could switch to "HeHalil" (The Flute) as performed by the Dudaim, an Israeli duo from the 70-80s. They could finish off with "Inns of Granny White/Elysian Forest" by Mark O'Connor. That would about cover the range!

In fact, Harold, I believe dogswoods -- like beagles -- would bay...!

I don't know what your dogwood would sing, but check out my photo of the birch branch, growing straight up from a trunk dangling upside down barely holding on to the side of a cliff on the Flickr group. It's singing (in all of Gloria Gaynor's brassy tone), First I was afraid, I was petrified, didn't know how I could live without you by my side [...] I will survive!!!

Talking Plants' Past

Before Talking Plants the blog, there was Ketzel Levine's Talking Plants the Web site. Although it's no longer updated, the site still offers an archive of Plant Profiles. It also answers the eternal question: Why Did My Plant Die?.
