Tell Me More

What's in a Name?

It's a simple enough question. People hear you have a new show and they ask you, all friendly-like, "So, what's the name?"
"Uh, name?"
"Yeah, the name. What's the name of your new show?"
"Oh, right. The name...the name...."

Enough secrets! Enough lies! We don't have a name yet.

There, I've said it. It's out. I feel so much better... relieved, really. I don't have to hide anymore. We don't have a name yet. We really want one. Just a little name. A name all our own. Is that too much to ask?

It's not like we haven't been trying. We have. But we haven't been able to come up with one that satisfies us, and perhaps more important, our legal department (it can't already belong to another radio show, for example). A group of us is having a meeting on Monday, when Marie and I return from Los Angeles, to brainstorm some more.

But then the obvious thought occurred. Why not ask you?

This is not really a contest because there is no prize -- but you can best believe that if we pick your name I will take you out to dinner if you get yourself to Washington. And we'll put your picture on the Web site. Fair enough?

I'm not going to bore you with all the ideas we've tossed around. Start fresh. Put your thinking cap on. Help us out. The name we pick might be your own.

Update: We now have official rules for our show-naming contest -- yes, contest.

When I heard an advertisment for this show I was intruiged by the concept. My interest only grew after listening to the first podcast. I am in love with this show because it exposes diverse ideas, viewpoints, and information to its listeners. The Christmas segment discussing the role of the holiday in African American families (or lack of a role) was refreshing in its originality and its signifiance in modern culture.

I suppose my point is that I like the name the show already has. Rough cuts. It invokes the image in my mind of all the discarded film or media that end up on the cutting room floor in other shows. This podcast takes the "road less traveled" and I think the name rightly holds to this image.

Consider calling your new show "The Blinding Obvious" to provoke the idea that we all can see the color of people and even sense their political or social bias... but we so often become "blinded by the obvious" and conduct ourselves in way that prevents harmony and understanding among ourselves.

The challenge in naming a thing, whether it is a show or a baby, is that not only does the name identify the thing named it also limits the thing named. A name tells us what a thing is not as much as it tells us what the thing is.

All that said, I offer for consideration, "Dialogues with Michele Martin." Such a name offers a lot of room to roam while describing what we're going to listen to.

I hope this show makes it. I really like what I've heard so far.

Sent by M. Zivich | 10:07 AM ET | 01-31-2007

Wow! There are already some great suggestions for a name. I am amazed how most of them are names that sound like they could already be part of the NPR line-up. I guess that as listeners we just "absorb" that NPR flavor.

My idea was just a slight variation on your description that "nothing is assumed". Shorten it to: NOTHING ASSUMED.

I haven't actually hear the show but I read most of the blog and many of the comments.

It seems that the names previously mentioned: Different Shoes, Spectrum, Different Voices, Nice to Know and Rough Cuts might be even better than my suggestion. They give a little more "feel" for what the show is about. I like the idea of "not your momma's radio" but haven't heard the show enough to know if it has that "attitude".

Good luck on the name selection. Can't wait to hear the show as it progresses.

I am tired of all the ???gotcha??? politics and have thought for many years that what is needed in our society is a program that would work toward a ???consensus???. In fact, I would name the program CONSENSUS and work toward arriving at that point ??? or least moving the dialogue in that direction. Converge on a point that will solve a problem, not just get someone (re)elected.

My format would exclude ALL politicians. I would have a set of pros/cons presented one week for discussion of those points the next week with experts (think tanks or otherwise) to eliminate those points that do not have merit and emphasize those points that would help solve a problem. Ensure no name calling or attacks of any kind???. just a civil discussion that would improve our nation and the world.

NPR is the only network that would dare do such a thing.

I like the feel of the pieces available currently and the perspective from different angles (oooh, there's another one). I think of presenting an article like 'Powerful Voices' going through a similar process.

More Possibilities:

"Airing Reality"
"Cosmopolitanism Considered"

"Cosmopolitan" is such a buzz word in the world today. It really captures while at the same time questions how regions or individuals identify/define themselves while still contributing to the global community.

"No Voice Unheard" - as a sarcastic tribute to No Child Left Behind ...

I like "America Unplugged" or "Spectrum"

It is so hard to capture the idea of addressing many perspectives in America without exacerbating the "other" factor that creates need to broadcast these stories. It is so imperative that people hear these messages - Colorblindness is a myth...

There appears to be a small misconception about some posters. "Rough Cuts" is the name of the project for having listeners listen to new shows. It really can't be the name for Ms. Martin's show. Once her show is in production "Rough Cuts" will feature somebody else's new show.

"Most Things Disregarded"
Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and may not be appropriate for your program, but it's--I think--at least a mildly amusing parody of "All Things Considered."

"Galileo" or "Starry Messenger" - if your show aims to present diverse ideas, challenge conventional wisdom, and highlight the unexpected - well, no one exemplified seeing the world in a new light as did Galileo. Like your show, he assumed nothing.(Starry Messenger was the name of his published astronomical observations)

My suggestion for a name is Truth Without Spin. I get so tired of hearing statements that are "true" but are so slanted that I can't reach a reasonable opinion of the discussion. I also hate it when a guest makes a ridiculus clain and the host doesn't challenge them.

Hey all! REMINDER: As mentioned in official "rules," the deadline for submitting a name for the new NPR show was 2/16/07. All submissions posted after that date will not be eligible for the prize -- dinner with Michel, if your suggested name is chosen.

Thanks again for sharing your creativity. An announcement to reveal the name the new NPR show is on the horizon! Stay tuned...
