A New Day in Radio

Regarding the woman who tried to turn herself into a baseball fan: At age 62 I fell in love with and married a man who is a golf professional and has been an athlete all his life. I had, all my life, been a person who disliked the sound of any sports show on TV or the radio and turned it off as quickly as possible. I decided to turn myself into a fan for two reasons: 1) I was crazily in love with the man and wanted to share as much as possible with him. (It's important to note that he, in turn, listens to, studies, and absorbs from me a great deal in the areas of my own long standing interests.) The second reason was that I had long wanted to become a more active person and spend more time outdoors. My husband began teaching me to play golf the same year we met, and I now enjoy watching golf tournaments on TV with him. I know the names a most of the preeminent players, the leading brands of golf equipment, theories about swing styles, and much more. P.S. I am also learning about football, enough to enjoy watching games with him, although I have drawn the line at baseball and basketball, which are also not great interests of his.

It is interesting to hear about the foreign aid offered to the United States and how we didn't use it. One can derive dignity from offering assistance, and that doesn't have to come at the expense of the recipient. If our government views offers of aid from other countries as condescending, then what does it mean when we offer aid? Further, if we received aid that wasn't returned or used, how does that make others feel?

Concerning Rene Syler (who I admire as a very strong woman), I think that an important part of that discussion which Michel and Rene didn't touch upon is that not all of us are fortunate enough to have access to health care. From time to time, I must remind myself of how lucky I'm am to have insurance. With this in mind, I reckon that there are uninsured people who go public or stay private with their health problems for various reasons.

My heart goes out refugees -- like the Vietnamese that De Tran represented. I lived among refugees from Indochina in the Sydney, Australia area for about year, and it was sad to see how many had one foot in their former homeland and one in their new country. However, in many cases it seemed that they didn't have solid footing in either. While their childhoods were in one country, some of their family members lived solely in the new land. I admire many who I knew who strived to live well despite their almost stateless existence and feel sorry for all the challenges that they face.

Like Sydney Trent, I'm not a sports fan, and I'm a guy in his mid-20s. Gasp! However, that leaves something for me to build a relationship with someone (a lover, son or daughter, in-law, friend, colleague, etc.) and attribute a newfound interest to that person and thus, deepening that connection.

Now that I've established that I'm not a sports fan, the segment about the baseball umpire Ria Cortesio made me think about other women sports. While I don't follow sports much, I do recall that the WNBA and women's soccer were much more prominent in years past. Am I completely detached from sports, or have these sports fallen from the nation's attention? If the later is correct, why?

Michel I was listening to your show and I heard the segment on starting your own business. Your guess failed to mention that you can keep your day job until you learn about business and finance by starting a home-based business.
