This AP alert just came in:

California high court upholds gay marriage ban but allows existing same-sex marriages to stand.

Update at 2:04 p.m. ET: The court's opinion now appears to be reachable online.

Update at 1:27 p.m. ET: We've been trying for 27 minutes to read the decision online. But the Supreme Court of California's website seems has been overwhelmed. At some point, the decision is supposed to appear here.

Update at 1:06 p.m. ET. The AP adds that the court's decision means:

That the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.

But, the court:

Rejected an argument from gay rights activists that the ban revised the California constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval.
