Uh-Oh. Add chocolate chip cookies to the foods that can hurt you. The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to toss Nestle Tollhouse cookie dough which could cause them to toss their cookies, and worse. A few dozen cases of E-Coli-related illness have apparently been connected to the dough.
An excerpt of a report from NPR's Kathy Lohr:
The FDA says consumers who have pre-packaged refrigerated Nestle Tollhouse cookie products in their homes... Should throw them away. Since March, there have been 66 reports of illnesses in 28 states related to the e. coli contamination. 25 people were hospitalized. No one has died.
The E. Coli bacteria cause can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting, diarrea and kidney failure Young children and the elderly at most at risk. Nestle has voluntarily recalled the products after illnesses were reported by those who ate the raw dough... And the company is cooperating with an ongoing investigation.
The FDA is also warning retail outlets, restaurants and food service operations not to sell or serve any Nestle prepacked Tollhouse refrigerated products that are subject to the recall. They include cookie dough tubs, tubes, and bars of cookie dough.
This is why I continually tell family members not to eat this stuff raw when I'm myself, not sneaking some raw dough. I won't be eating it raw again, at least not for a while.
