The arraignment of suspected al-Qaida terrorist Ahmed Ghailani is set for 4 p.m. ET at the Manhattan courtroom of U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska, NPR's Ari Shapiro tells us.
He gets that word straight from the U.S. Department of Justice.
As we reported first thing this morning, Ghailani arrived in New York overnight from the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
He's the first Guantanamo detainee to be brought into the U.S. for trial as part of the Obama administration's new plan to close the facility and bring some of the suspects to justice.
Ghailani, as the Associated Press notes, was indicted in 1998 for the al-Qaida bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed more than 224 people. Ghailani is a Tanzanian.
