The FAA says a Continental Airlines pilot on a flight from Belgium to Newark has died, the Associated Press reports. The plane is due to land around noon ET.
WPIX.com says two first officers have assumed the pilots duties. It adds that "the aircraft is expected to get special treatment upon landing, from the Newark Airport tower."
Continental's website says flight 61 is "estimated to arrive 4 minutes late." It is a Boeing 777-200 with a capacity to hold 283 passengers and crew.
Update at 11:58 a.m. ET: The plane has landed and is making its way to the gate, according to Continental's flight status page.
Update at 12:12 p.m. ET. According to the AP:
Airline spokeswoman Kelly Cripe says the pilot died of natural causes. Cripe says he was a 61-year-old man with more than 20 years of service to the airline.
